Jerry Seinfeld Explains How to Write a Joke

Jerry Seinfeld recently took time off from his busy schedule of doing nothing to talk to the New York Times Magazine about the process of joke writing. It’s a pretty interesting five minute short interview where he takes us through the process of writing a new joke that took him two years. A joke about pop tarts.

In Seinfeld’s case, he has a very specific method that involves the exact same type of yellow pad and blue pen that he wrote Seinfeld with. And two years for a pop tart joke? I’m not sure I understand that, but the end result is indeed funny. Even telling the joke in broken pieces to no audience who can laugh at it, it’s still funny. And that is the man’s talent.

Does this mean he’s going to have an actual new stand-up act any time soon? Because that would be fantastic.
