Mining and Smithing
Smithing in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim allows you to create and refine strong weaponry and jewelry and turn your Dragonborn into a worthy adversary. During your adventure, you can mine Gold Ore from several caves within the Skyrim world and later smelt it into Gold Ingots. Some locations that contains significant amounts of Gold Ore include:
- Blackreach
- Bthardamz
- Darkshade
- Kolskeggr
The Kolskeggr Mine is the most popular of these locations and is known for having a wealth of Gold Veins. It can be found to the east-northeast of Markarth, and in the vicinity, you can also find a pickaxe and smelter for your convenience. In total, the Kolskeggr Mine has a total of 17 mineable Gold Veins and 4 Gold Ores that you can loot. This amount is replenished every 30 in-game days. In comparison, the other mining destinations on our list contain 3 to 4 Gold Veins. The Kolskeggr Mine is patrolled and protected by the Forsworn. This means that your Dragonborn will likely have to fight their way in so you should go prepared for battle.
Other Mining Destinations
In addition to the mining locations discussed above, there are other destinations in Skyrim where your Dragonborn can mine Gold Ores from Gold Veins. These locations will usually contain Gold Ores that can be looted from treasure troves and furniture surfaces. They include:
- Pilgrim’s Trench
- Shrine of the Mehrunes Dagon
- Wreck of the Winter War
- Shor’s Watchtower
These mining destinations contain at least 4 Gold Ores that the Dragonborn can loot. The Shrine of the Mehrunes Dagon has 16 Gold Ores and will make a prime target for mining Gold Ore. To enter this shrine, you must get to Pieces of the Past, which is the end of the Mythic Dawn questline. This quest begins when the Dragonborn gets a museum pamphlet from a courier inviting them to a recently opened museum in Dawnstar. As you go on with the quest, you will visit the shrine and make a challenging decision that will allow you to enter. You should find 16 Gold Ores inside the shrine. Once you mine it, you can find a smelter at a convenient distance from the shrine and turn the Ores into Gold Ingots.
Transmuting
If you do not wish to venture through the land of Skyrim looking for Gold Ores and Ingots, you can use the game’s system to your advantage. Your Dragonborn can cast a powerful Transmute (Alteration) spell and convert any mineral you already have into Gold Ingot using only magicka. To do this, you must have Silver Ore in your inventory. Turning an existing metal into Gold Ingot uses up 88 points of magicka and removes your Silver Ore, as you will see in your notifications. The catch, however, is that you may only do this once every in-game day. You can complete the conversion, spend the rest of the time resting, then repeat the process when an in-game day elapses. If you do not have Silver Ores in your inventory, you can use the Transmute spell to change your Iron Ore to Silver Ore first then convert the Silver Ore into Gold Ore. As mentioned, using this spell will cost you 88 magicka points. You can reduce this cost by 25 percent by using Fortify Alteration potion. You can then find a nearby smelter and change the Gold Ore to Ingots.
Acquiring Transmute Mineral Ore
The Transmute Mineral Ore or Transmute is an adept-level spell that you can acquire form a fortified bandit encampment located in Whiterun Hold called Halted Stream Camp. You can also purchase it from vendors. If you go the camp route, you should know that it harbors up to 8 bandits. However, since they are confined to a small space, you should be able to clear the camp in several minutes. After you defeat the bandits and get to the chief bandit, you should spot the Transmute spell on the table to your left as you stand next to the chief. The camp is a treasure trove containing several other veins and other portions that you can loot.
Falmer Loot
In total, the game has 48 Gold Ingots, 23 Gold Ores, and 78 mineable Gold Veins in guaranteed locations. There are other individual veins strewn outside across Tamriel. For example, another possible location for Gold Ingot is Falmer loot from level 10. Finding Gold Ore here is a purely random event so you should not count on it. Just go about your quests and, if you find a sizeable Gold Vein, mine it.
Conclusion
Crafting is a key part of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim experience. Through it, you can fortify and personalize your abilities and characters. Thankfully, there are several metals in the game that provide endless opportunities for crafting. Gold Ingot is one of these metals that you can obtain by forging, smelting, and mining, or transmuting. Because it is very rare, it is also very useful. You can use it to create strong weaponry and jewelry, including necklaces and rings. You can even use it Konahrik’s Mask.
