The Strange Phenomenon of “Cosplay” in 1982

Long before it was called “cosplay” nerds were dressing up as their favorite sci-fi characters and going to conventions. Their outfits weren’t the elaborate crafts we see today, and the conventions weren’t multi-million dollar behemoths, but they were  the ancient origins of modern cosplay, and worth a look.

Above is a news broadcast from 1982 that aims to discover the motivation behind dressing up in such nerdy outfits and going places. It’s an interesting look into the past, and you can really see how much MORE of a niche nerd culture used to be back in the day. It’s truly evolved quite a bit since then, and it never hurts to remember our roots.

Thank you fellow nerds from the past, I can’t imagine how many wedgies you endured for us to be where we are today.
