Movie Recommendation of the Week: Beautiful Girls
This is one of my favorite movies that isn’t a masterpiece kind of a movie. It’s just a movie that truly hits home and one you can watch over and over again. The late Ted Demme directed Beautiful Girls which is about basically “growing up.” Willie Conway goes home for his high school class reunion. He is at a crossroads in his life. He can’t decide if he should marry his girlfriend. He can’t decide if he should quit his music and take a job as a salesman. Over the course of the film, he spends time with his old friends who are all at similar crossroads. By the end they all discover what it is that they want.
And basically all through the movie you see some amazing subplots. One of which Willie struggles because he thinks he’s in love with a 13-year-old. Another is one of Willie’s friends constantly cheating on his girl with his former high school sweetheart. It’s filled with humor, fun acting, and is extremely poignant.
Great stuff from Matt Dillon, Timothy Hutton, Michael Rappaport and a young Natalie Portman. Check out the trailer after the jump….
