Is That You Stephen?

This goofy picture of Stephen Colbert circa uh, a number of years ago, has taught me a valuable lesson. Be nice to that goofy kid in all your classes with unkempt hair and a scraggly beard, he just might grow up to be the host of his own late night show, and invent new words like “truthiness.”

How many of you watch The Daily Show (don’t get me started on people who call it “The Jon Stewart Show” or even worse “The Jon Daily Show”) but not The Colbert Report?  It’s just a big time commitment to watch both, and if I have to pick one, I go with the former. Colbert is funny yes, but his entire thing seems like a bit that goes on and on and never relents. I guess that’s part of the charm, but I just prefer snarky comments from Stewart, who can occasionally transform into an Onion-like parody of Glenn Beck, but only rarely, and certainly doesn’t base a whole show around it.

But Colbert has his niche, and his audience, and he’s sure as hell better than any other cable late night host out there.

I think I'm a part of the first generation of journalists to skip print media entirely, and I've learned a lot these last few years at Forbes. My work has appeared on TVOvermind, IGN, and most importantly, a segment on The Colbert Report at one point.

    Strangely I am the reverse. I find TDS increasingly weak, writing, interviews etc, compared to TCR. Just check out the ‘art special’ with Steve Martin this week to show the genius of TCR.

    …..oh and the minor fact the actually gave decent coverage to the Wikileaks story on Colbert.

  2. I watch Colbert over Stewart. I laugh out loud every night with Colbert. I like Jon Stewart, and I loved it when Rob Riggle was on the Daily Show. I just don’t watch the Daily Show as much anymore.

    Have you forgotten than conan is on cable now? I really like colbert but conan trumps all.

  5. Enter my most unpopular opinion on the site ever: I don’t like Conan.

    I mean, I like him as a person, and was on his side for that whole Jay Leno thing, and I’m glad he has a show now, but he is just not my style of comedy, and I’ve only found him truly funny on rare occasions.
