Debate of the Day: Spike Lee’s Oldboy

The first trailer for Spike Lee’s Oldboy has premiered, and you can check it out above. I’m never the biggest fan of remaking foreign movies just for the sake of them being in English and filled with pretty white faces, but Oldboy is SO good, maybe it could work. I was more curious to see what a Will Smith-starring version would have been like, as was once rumored, but now Josh Brolin has subbed in.

From the looks of it, it stays true to the original film, though I was confused about when they showed his daughter on the TV, which seems to muddle a very important plot point.

I wonder how the hammer hallway fight scene can possible compare to the original, unless they recreate it frame by frame. Here’s a refresher of that brutal fight in case it wasn’t seared into your memory the first time.

Will this be any good, or an affront to the original?

  1. I just hope to crap Spike Lee didn’t mess anything up. And Paul, it’s been made clear that that plot point won’t be in this movie. Early production made that clear.

  2. Technically Spike Lee’s Oldboy is said to be more based off the original manga, which does not have that particular plot point with a daughter, or a daughter at all.

  3. I’m still against this kind of unnecessary remakes. Just a proof of Hollywood’s declining movie industry. Too lazy to come up with original ideas. It may not be a shitty movie but it’s will forgettable, just like Let Me In.

Regarding his daughter, it will be nice if somehow the villain brainwashed a random women to play as the daughter and the actual daughter as the companion…double twist!

  4. I think everyone who saw the original is in agreement that this is totally unnecessary. But this is ‘murica and we hate reading!
Spike Lee is so unlikable because he made a brilliant movie almost 25 years ago and thinks he should get a lifetime pass because of it.

  5. Just one thing, kinda off topic but It’s just me or everybody hates trailers wich show every important scene in the movie?
Ok I kinda know the plot already but… with some time and this scenes u can figure a lot of things…
