10 Things You Didn’t Know about Star Wars: The Mandalorian
The Mandalorian is a new web series that will be premiering on Disney’s upcoming streaming services Disney+. Much remains unknown about the series at this point in time, but there is sufficient interest that new information spreads with remarkable speed whenever it comes out. Here are 10 things that you may or may not have known about The Mandalorian:
1. Centered on a Mandalorian
Perhaps unsurprisingly, The Mandalorian will be centered on a Mandalorian. As for what a Mandalorian is supposed to be, well, that can be a bit complicated. In short, Boba Fett looked cool enough in The Empire Strikes Back that Star Wars fans wanted to learn more about his background, which resulted in the creation of the fictional culture called the Mandalorians. However, there are significant differences between the Mandalorians as presented in canon and Legends canon, meaning that what has been said about one may or may not be applicable to the other.
2. Centered on a Mandalorian Gunfighter
Curiously, the main character has been called a Mandalorian gunfighter. For those who are unfamiliar, gunfighter is a real life term that refers to individuals in the American Old West with a reputation for being dangerous with a gun as well as a reputation for getting involved in gunfights for one reason or another. The choice of term is not coincidental.
3. Set in the Outer Reaches
After all, The Mandalorian is supposed to be set in the outer reaches of the setting where the ruling power has no more than tenuous control if that. As such, it seems probable that there will be plenty of western influence, particularly considering the choice of descriptor.
4. After the Fall of the Empire
It has been stated that The Mandalorian will be set after the fall of the Empire. However, some of the other information that has been released suggests that the New Republic is supposed to exist in a meaningful sense in the rest of the setting. As a result, it is clear that a fair amount of time has passed since the events of Return of the Jedi, meaning that the web series isn’t set right afterwards.
5. Before the Emergence of the First Order
With that said, the other important chronological point from the revealed information is that The Mandalorian will be set before the emergence of the First Order. In setting, the First Order was founded sometime between 5 years and 21 years after the Battle of Yavin by Imperial remnants that had fled into the Unknown Region, but it took some time before its existence become better known in the rest of the setting.
6. A Live-Action Star Wars Series Has Been Under Consideration For Some Time
A live-action Stars Wars series isn’t exactly a new concept. For instance, it is known that George Lucas was developing a darker and grittier Star Wars series in the late 2000s and early 2010s, though that process winded up being interrupted by the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney. With that said, there is no direct connection between The Mandalorian and what Lucas was working on.
7. One of a Number of Live-Action Star Wars Series Being Developed
In February of 2018, it was reported that Disney CEO Bob Iger had revealed to investors that more than one live-action Star Wars series were being developed. However, while The Mandalorian is on its way, it is important to note that there is no guarantee that the others are ever going to be made, meaning that interested individuals might want to keep their expectations at a reasonable level.
8. Will Be Written By Jon Favreau
It has been revealed that The Mandalorian will be written by Jon Favreau, who will be one of the executive producers as well. Suffice to say that Favreau has worked with Disney on previous occasions, seeing as how he has directed a couple of Iron Man movies as well as made important contributions to other MCU movies.
9. Will Star Pedro Pascal
A fair amount of information has been released about the cast members. For example, the main character will be played by Pedro Pascal, who most people will know because of either Oberyn Martell on Game of Thrones or Javier Peña on Narcos.
10. Could See Costume Changes
There are reports that The Mandalorian could see costume changes for the main character as he incorporates new tools and upgrades into his suit over the course of the series. It will be interesting to see how this is worked into the narrative, seeing as how their suits play such an important role in identifying Mandalorian characters.
