What the Hell is Going On in the World War Z Trailer?

George Romero gave us slow zombies. 28 Days Later gave us fast zombies. World War Z will give us…tidal wave zombies?

This teaser for the upcoming World War Z trailer via ET (barf) gives us enough of a look at the new movie for me to say…what the f***? Though I’ve never read the source material, I can’t imagine that the zombies described in the book behave quite like this.

This literally almost looks like a scene from 2012, only the floodwaters have been replaced by a mass of human bodies. Why the hell do the move like that? After getting used to the traditional make-uped look of zombies in most new movies and shows featuring them, this sort of CGI craziness seems really backwards and goofy looking. Maybe the full trailer will clear it up a bit, but for now, does it ever look weird.

  1. That’s exactly what I was thinking. Looks more like a sand storm or a plague of some sort of insect from one of those awful mummy movies.

    It looks ridiculous already. Pass.

  2. Loving the book so much, I came into this trailer thinking “how bad could it actually be”. Wow…pretty bad apparently.

Feels like we are getting “I Am Legend” all over again. Screw trying to capture the subtlety and nuance of the source material, just stick a big name actor in the role, spray a bunch of horrible cgi nonsense all over the place and cash your checks…ugh

  3. Erm … well, having READ the source material, I can say that there are elements of how these zombies behave that directly relate to their behavior in the book. Specifically, I’m thinking about the ocean off India and how the zombies have ‘evolved’ to behave similar to schools of fish. There are other passages wherein the zombies do kinda/sorta behave like ‘herds,’ but the CGI sequences above do bear more than a passing resemblance to the crap of THE MUMMY. Good call there.

And, yes … seriously … run out, buy WORLD WAR Z, and read the book today. It’s that grand. Immeasurably grand on so many levels … and, yes, I expect the film “adaptation” to be utter garbage by comparison to the novel.

  4. The part where the zombies are running over a bus seems to be the battle of Yonkers from the book.
The “tidal wave” lost me… Maybe some of the action that took place in India, Pakistan or China?

The book is ver enjoyable and a must-read if you like zombies. It’s really interesting how it shows the spread of the disease around the globe. It’s obviously centered in the US but the fun part was seeing how it shows how each culture faces the infection.

Anyway, I will go see it at the movies, but I am not sure how good this will be.

    Bye!

  5. The book is indeed excellent. Met Max Brooks at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con (where he signed my GI Joe Hearts & minds & informed us that he used to live in London not far from us-but I digress).

The beauty of the book was that there was no real central character or ‘hero’ doing the ‘look after my young daughter against impossible odds’ thing. So yea, bring in Brad Pitt. Great.

That effects on that sand-storm of zombies looked crap as well.

  6. I don’t usually advocate for this, but World War Z should definitely be heard in its audiobook form.

It’s narrated by Max Brooks (the author), but each of the characters interviewed is done by a different actor, including Carl Reiner, John Turturro, and Mark Hamill among others, and their performances are incredibly powerful for being sound only.

It’s especially great if you’re planning to take a long car trip, as it is over 15 hours long if I remember correctly. But if you’re looking to take some time, it’s really an amazing experience to have it read and let the characters come to life. Can’t recommend it enough.

  7. I travel a lot for work and spend a lot of time driving in the pre-light hours. Picked up a copy of World War Z audio book and loved it. I’ll read the book and then see the movie, now. I’m sure the movie won’t do the book justice, the rarely do, but it will be nice to see nonetheless.
