What do you Think of the Cast of World of Warcraft Characters?

warcraft

There are those of us who played the World of Warcraft or the real-time strategy Warcraft games that came before it who hoped that those amazing cut scenes would eventually become some sort of full length feature film. Then the rumor mill started bombarding the internet with discussions of the Warcraft universe being made into a live action movie! For once the rumors didn’t disappoint and the movie was announced. Blizzcon was recently held in California and Blizzard announced who would be playing the key characters from the world of Warcraft movie.

The World of Warcraft is a game that I spent around three years playing up to and through the expansion of Wrath of the Lich King. I would have partook in the next expansion, titled Cataclysm, but my gaming life took a back seat to real life and I let my account expire. I watched along the MMORPG sidelines as the rest of the expansions rolled through and introduced new content and characters giving the players endless possibilities of what they could do within the world of Azeroth. I would be lying if I said I never missed playing. Raiding with my guild into the wee hours of the night trying to obtain loot to complete my armor sets brought me tons of enjoyment despite how many saw it as a waste of time. Now that I’ve been away for so long I’m sure that I’m behind on the characters and the lore behind many of the stories. Which is all the more reason to be excited for the Warcraft movie, because from what I gather it won’t be all that hard to jump in and enjoy regardless of knowing the characters or not.

In light of this I’ve gone through and gathered a list of who’s been cast thus far and a brief on who they’re playing in hopes of helping myself better understand what’s to come. (I would say to help the Unrealtors out there too, but I’m guessing you guys probably know more about Warcraft than I do) I’ll do my best to refrain from giving away any potential spoilers.

Should I mention that I’m for the HORDE!?

Durotan – Toby Kebbell

Toby Kebbell

Durotan is the father of everyone’s favorite Horde guy, the future Warchief – Thrall.

Garona – Paula Patton

Paula Patton

Half Orc/Half Draenei (which is hard to find an actual picture of her looking as such). The ruthless assassin of someone quite important. (she was said to look “surprisingly human” … ) May or may not have had an romantic relations with the character Medivh.

Anduin Lothar – Travis Fimmel

Travis Fimmel

Anduin was the protector of the people of Stormwind and the leader of their armies. He was also a childhood friend of Llane Wrynn and Medivh. (there is lots more to tell but I don’t want to spoil the movie!)

King Llane Wrynn – Dominic Cooper

Ruler of the Kingdom of Azeroth. Naturally this creates a lot of enemies for you. (wink wink)

Medivh – Ben Foster

Ben Foster

Probably one of the best known characters in Warcraft, Medivh is the guy responsible for opening the Dark Portal and causing all the problems Azeroth faced. The father of Med’an, he tried his best to get both the Horde and the Alliance to fight together to vanquish the bigger evil. (there’s lots more to this dude but again, I’ll save it for the movie)

Blackhand – Clancy Brown

Clancy Brown

I would consider Blackhand a lot like Koba from the Planet of the Apes. He’s an orc who leads with brute strength and power but not the sharpest tool in the shed. Not a fan of Durotan either – just a friendly FYI.

Khadgar – Ben Schnetzer

Ben Schnetzer

One of the more powerful wizards out there, Khadgar was the apprentice to Medivh. Here’s a hint, he’s a lot younger than his old appearance suggests.

Orgrim – Robert Kazinsky

Robert Kazinsky

Also called “Doomhammer” Orgrim was the orc who gave Thrall the his warhammer and was the childhood friend of Durotan. Considered by many as a “backstabber”.

Gul’Dan – Daniel Wu

Daniel Wu

Gul’Dan was the first orcish warlock/shaman. Directly involved with many of the events that unfold causing both the First and Second Wars.

That’s the list thus far. There’s also a mention of a Lady Taria on IMDB but I have no idea who that is. Feel free to check out the entire cast that they’ve got up on their site if you’re curious. What do you think of the casting so far? I’ve read that the teaser trailer/footage that the showed at Blizzcon was amazing and that the motion capture is going to be on par if not better than Avatar. Which will be awesome to see, especially for all the Orcs as main characters. I didn’t think I’d get this excited about a Warcraft movie, but it’s shaping up to be excellent!

  1. After watching the Warcraft movie panel at this past weekends Blizzcon, I can safely say I feel comfortable with Robert Kazinsky as Orgrim. The panel is worth a watch if you can find it on youtube.

  2. I am encouraged they went with a less well known cast. Paula Patton and Clancy Brown are the only names I recognize. Though I note Dominic Cooper as ‘Tony Stark’s dad’. And yes, Kazinky totally sold me for Orgrim at the Blizzcon panel.
BTW, the picture you have for King Llane is actually Varian Wrynn, Llane’s son.

    1. I agree with Mark below, how do you not know Ben Foster? And Travis is from Vikings – an awesome show I suggest everyone should watch.

Thank you kindly for pointing out the image for King Llane was incorrect – dang Google images for being wrong! – I’ve since fixed it kind sir.
