Unreality Contest: Get Yourself Published
Alright, time for a….different sort of contest on the site here. Normally we’re offering free DVDs or Halloween costumes or such, but I’ve concocted a different prize today that I think might be interesting to some of you.
I’m heading out of town between Christmas and New Years. Normally, that would entail me writing about 40 odd posts for Unreality ahead of time to make sure you have something to read while I’m away. But I thought it might be nice to only write 35, and so I’m recruiting five readers to write five posts (one each) to be published on Unreality while I’m away.
Why is this worthwhile? Well, if you’re an aspiring writer, you can put that you were published on a site with 3 million page views a month, which isn’t too shabby. It’s also the case that in 2012, we may be looking to add a few additional writers for the site, and if you win this little contest, that would certainly put you in a good position if you wanted to end up contributing on a regular basis.
So what are we looking for? As much as we appreciate you sending in a funny YouTube video or GIF like you all are prone to do, for this contest, we want you to actually write something somewhat substantial. It can be a love letter to your favorite game, show or movie. It can be hate mail to a piece of overrated tripe. It can be a top ten list, it can even be a photoshop or art project if words aren’t your thing. Specific reviews of current media probably aren’t the best idea as I don’t want to publish thoughts on a movie or show weeks after it premiered. Above all else, no matter what it is, it has to be well executed original content that either makes us think or makes us laugh, hopefully both.
You can send your entry as a Word doc to paul@unrealitymag.com. If it does get published, I reserve the right to edit it, but chances are I will only change minor things and you will have full credit for your writing on the post itself, along with a link to whatever portfolio you may have on the internet.
OK, unusual contest I know, but I think it could be fun, and I’m looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with. You can send in posts for consideration over the next week or so. The cutoff date will be some time before Christmas, and I’ll let you know when the winning posts are going up after that. Thanks, and good luck!
UPDATE: If a written piece, articles should be over 700 words.
UPDATE 2: Yes, this has to be about typical Unreality content, so movies, TV, games or comics.
Hmm, interesting indeed.
Can they ALL be about Skyrim? Or Skyrim Widows? Or, specifically, my skyrim widows and the planning, deals and sacrifices made by myself and others to devote our lives to this game.
Because I’ve got lots of mateiral on that one… Really, I could write a pretty thorough post on a total gamer living with a mostly non-gamer gf… Just a thought. Also, the gf and I dressed as Khal Drogo and Khaleesi for halloween, which is unrelated but still awesome.
@Nick S
Write it, send it. Sounds good
Can I send multiple entries?
@Schiapu
Sure.
Hmm…. Hope I have the time.. 🙂
Super sweet! Happy Monday to me.
If it gets published do we get paid?
Seriously? You put this contest up now? When I have to study for two exams and before a week of well deserved Christmas vacation?
Challenge accepted!
Yeah you get paid 50 internet dollars.
Ok, who or where do we send it to when we’re done? do we email it to someone?
I have a question. I do stories, and would I be able to write a sort of story or fanfiction (Non-romance) of a game or such?
@Imran
It’s in the post: paul@unrealitymag.com
@Joey
Yeah sure, why not. If it’s good I’d consider it.
I know it’s different from what this site usually covers, but could an article possibly be about music?
The article I am writing is substantial but isn’t about the virtual world rather something that we all face daily. Is this still in the lines of the requirements?
I think this is a great idea, but I’m not too good with writing stuff. Why don’t you do a post where people who read unreality can get too know each other a little bit better. Like for example ; ‘Where do unreality readers do most of their gaming?’-we can send you pictures of where we are doing most of our gaming, or how our gaming systems are set up and how they look like, and you can post them for different countries. I think it would be great to see how someone from another part of the world with the same interest is doing his/her gaming and maybe we can get ideas from each other like gaming decorations and stuff. What do u think?!
Hmm sounds interesting. Haven’t seen a review of AC: Revelations yet. Would this be an appropriate topic?
Hey Paul, so the word minimum is 700, on the other end of the spectrum, is there a word maximum? Thanks!
@Will
No music
@Dustin
You’ll have to be more specific, but probably not.
@RBourn
Yeah sure, but I may end up reviewing it myself
@Jason
Let’s keep it under 2000.
I will most likely submit a photoshop or drawing mashup, in addition to a writing piece. Are there any size limits or specs you need for images coming by email?
Do we have a date it has to be in by? I have uni work needing done by Thursday and my girlfriend leaves the country on Friday morning, so I can write something Friday afternoon/over the weekend? Essentially is there a date I need to send it to you by?
