Trailer for Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist
I’m not precisely sure what to make of this upcoming webseries, Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist. I feel like it’s trying to follow in the footsteps of Mortal Kombat: Legacy, a dark reimagining of that game’s core concepts and character.
The problem with fighting games? Almost none of them have stories that are worth telling. Each individual character has a crazy long backstory, and with so many fighters in the roster, their plotlines interact and overlap and become rather muddled and ungrounded. Mortal Kombat may be the worst offender in my eyes, but Street Fighter isn’t far behind.
The effects here are cool, but I’m not clear on the plot, and the acting and choreography aren’t my favorite. Still, I suppose it could be cool, and I’ll give it a shot May 23rd.
This is where you and I differ, Mortal Kombat has an incredibly coherent story and a valid reason why the characters are fighting, most fighting games don’t have nearly as much intelligence and story as Mortal Kombat.
Fighting games from my childhood don’t need movies. Mortal Kombat is Bloodsport, Street Fighter is Lionhart, and Double Dragon is Double Impact. Van Damme had the concept on lockdown.
Sorry, I meant to comment on this right after I finished watching it but I fell asleep.
There is a difference between this and Mortal Kombat: Legacy. MK: Legacy is more of an ‘Anthology’ type webseries and has too many split plots, while ‘SF: Assassin’s Fist’ is just one story, which is Ryu and Ken’s origins.
Plus, this Street Fighter series is both a series and a movie (multi-format), which is something ‘MK: Legacy’ isn’t. It’s 12-episodes: 11-12 minutes each. Put them all together and it’s like a 2-hour movie, which will also come out on DVD/Blu-ray. 🙂
