The Five Best First Person Shooters On PS5
Growing up, the First Person Shooter genre was the only genre that mattered. Especially when it came down to a school night when all of my friends would be on and we’d rage all night to Call of Duty or Halo. It was special to me. Nowadays my love for first-person shooters has only grown and with it so has the genre itself. In what used to be a genre that was dominated by Call of Duty, first-person shooters have grown to be limitless in their possibilities. Just looking back at what the Playstation 4 had to offer with titles like Titanfall 2, Killzone Shadowfall, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, and Destiny it shows us just how diverse the gaming landscape can be. Titanfall 2 showed us that a first-person shooter can be much more than just boots on a ground type of deal. Titanfall 2 allowed players to grapple, slide, and project their way to the battlefield in massive battles that included giant titans that would traverse the field. Players were even able to hop into their titans and fight to change the tide of the battle in their favor. Can you tell that we enjoyed Titanfall 2? We’re saddened that a Titanfall 3 or something similar isn’t on this list but we can only hope that in the future Respawn announces plans to bring the franchise back in some way or form. But for now, let’s celebrate the games that are out and that we can enjoy on our PS5. These are the five best first-person shooters on PS5.
Borderlands 3
Let’s start with a game that just vastly improved once the PS5 version was released. Borderlands 3 is a fantastic game but we just can’t seem to love it. It may be because of just how high the bar was set with Borderlands 2 and the amount of time that we had to wait for Borderlands 3, but there’s something about it. We like it, but we don’t love it. On the PS4 though it was hard to even really like it. Terrible frame rate issues, laggy menus, and just too much going on that the PS4 couldn’t handle. Thankfully once the PS5 came along all those things were solved with it. The game looked great, it played great, the menus were no longer laggy, and it played how it should have from the beginning. It brought to light what we enjoyed from Borderlands 3 which was the gunplay and abilities. If you’re looking for a fun cooperative experience that you can play with your teammates for hours without end then Borderlands 3 is that game. The gunplay is great, the abilities are fun, and there is a ton of replayability in this. The real game starts after you finish the main game. Which is probably its biggest issue. The main game storyline just falls flat a lot of the time. For one, it’s too long. But still, that doesn’t take away from the fact that Borderlands 3 is a blast to play with friends. Check it out if you’re a fan of cooperative shooters.
Deathloop
Deathloop is as unique of a game as they come. The game puts you in the shoes of Colt who is fighting to stop a mysterious loop that plagues the island that he stays on. To do this he must kill eight of the highest-profile people on the island who we believe are actually in on the time loop. There is also another person on the island whose only job is to hunt Colt down and keep the loop going. It’s an interesting game that combines groundhog day with a high-stakes shooting extravaganza. The art style is incredible and the gunplay is fantastic. A game everyone with a PS5 should check out.
Back 4 Blood
Players have been asking for a sequel to the Left 4 Dead titles for ages. Who can blame them? Left 4 Dead and Left 4 dead 2 are two of the most fun cooperative survival games to ever be made. Back 4 Blood isn’t the sequel we always wanted but it’s a great spiritual successor that ticks a lot of the boxes we’ve been wanting from a new Left 4 Dead game. It’s a survival coop game that takes you through the zombie apocalypse along with three others in a game that combines card play and gunplay to form a very unique experience. In Back 4 Blood some cards will offer different buffs to the player, but there are also cards that the map will play that serve as debuffs. It makes it so that every time you play a level it feels slightly different than the last.
Destiny 2
Destiny 2 is the game that just keeps on giving. With countless news additions since its release, its been able to keep a strong and healthy community going for over 4 years. Its release on the PS5 has only made that experience even better. With 60 FPS and a native 4k resolution, it’s really hard to not love everything about Destiny 2 on PS5. Playstation describes the story of Destiny 2 as “You are a Guardian, defender of the Last City of humanity in a solar system under siege by infamous villains. Look to the stars and stand against the darkness. Your legend begins now.”
Apex Legends
We know that we won’t be getting Titanfall 3 anytime soon, but that’s okay because Apex Legends brings a lot of what we loved about Titanfall and brings it into the Apex Arena where it’s learning to thrive. Apex Legends is a battle royale game that mashes in fast-moving mechanics and fun gunplay to present addictive gameplay that will have you dropping in time after time in hopes of becoming the Apex Champion. You’re able to pick from a multitude of different characters, each with its unique style of play. We recommend you try all of them before really zeroing in on your main because every one of them brings in different things that will help land your team to victory. So being able to craft a team that will work together is part of the fun of Apex Legends.
