That Guy Actor of the Week: Colm Meaney
I think the first time I saw Colm Meaney was in the movie The Commitments and I thought he was awesome. Colm was sporting a solid Irish accent (afterall, he’s from Ireland!) and playing the part of the “man’s man” type of dad. Meaney seems to fit that bill in other roles too. He was the real prick cop in Con Air (sporting a good American accent) as well as the horrible father to Russell Brand in Get Him to the Greek. In that role he was sporting the British accent.
In any event, it’s like you’d recognize Meaney but certainly not by name. Colm has reached the century mark when it comes to roles (103) and it looks like the man is still going strong. Hopefully we’ll see him use a few more accents before all is said and done.
Check out a clip of Meaney after the jump….

Here’s a bit of a compilation that’s pretty awesome.
I’ve enjoyed him as an actor ever since Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine.
How in the bloody blue hell is it even POSSIBLE, on Unreality of all sites, to do a Colm Meaney “That Guy” post and NOT mention Star Trek? Colm has logged more screen time on Trek than EVERYONE ELSE EVER. You’d think that deserves at least a footnote.
Yeah, the Star Trek miss is huge, Unreality. HUGE. (Unless it was deliberate?) Plus, he’s on a current program now (“Hell on Wheels”) that just even get a nod. That’s pretty sad, too.
Anyway, I had the chance to see five TNG regulars in a traveling Broadway show (“Every Good Boy Does Fine”). Colm was one of them; basically, he had a walk-on part — all of maybe ten seconds long — and he stole the show. Seriously. It was a riot.
Yeah the vast majority of sci-fi fans would know him from either star trek or stargate and pretty much everyone from Ireland or the UK with a casual knowledge of films would know him by name.
The biggest “That guy” actor you have ever listed here or one of.
On a down-note; his attempt at a Welsh accent in “An Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Down a Mountain”, it reminded me of Sean Connery trying to do any accent but Scottish.
He’s currently cast as a pretty serious bastard in AMC’s “Hell on Wheels” which I have enjoyed significantly more than I’d anticipated.
SMH unreality, missing that he’s from Star Trek TNG and DS9. That’s blasphemy. Also, another solid flick that he’s in is Intermission. It also has Colin Farrel. Good movie, you should check it out.
I think I’m going to be that guy and join the dogpile.
No mention of Star Trek, how dare you?
He was the pilot of the doomed Canadian airliner in Die Hard 2.
Y’know, I think in Ireland there’s a tax film-makers have to pay if Colm Meaney isn’t in the cast. And if you like him, I think he’s at his best in The Snapper.
@Penny He’s had more screen time on Star Trek than Worf?
@Amy
Actually, no. I know you can’t judge wikipedia at face value, but this seems like an area where the nerds who update it would be particularly anal, and Colm Meaney’s page says:
“With 225 total appearances on Star Trek (173 on Deep Space Nine and 52 on The Next Generation), he has made more appearances on the franchise than any other actor except Michael Dorn (280)”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colm_Meaney
Worf doesn’t count. He’s a pussy. I disavow his very existence.
This is the confirmation I needed for my theory that the folks on this site are not geeks, but merely poseurs. I was starting to wonder when NattyB ALSO thought that guy playing Adam West was actually him (they don’t even look alike) but now this? Come on. I’ve known Colm Meaney’s name since I bought his action figure at age 7. You’re behind 7 year old me right now.
More trekkie rage, obviously.
Being Irish, I know Colm Meaney well (I don’t mean personally, Ireland’s not that small), I’m surprised you didn’t mention Intermission, he’s brilliant in that as a asshole garda who loves himself a bit too much.
Oh and this is relevant and priceless
