Seven Seriously Scary Short-Films

There_Are_Monsters_6347

I would have to say that some of the scariest films that I’ve seen have never made it to the big screen. Many are shown only at film festivals or are exclusively released online; and the only way to find these kinds of films is to do some pretty serious investigative Googling! I do realize a five to fifteen minute film isn’t meant for the theatres, but it’s still a shame that these kind of films don’t have the ability to reach a broader audience. There are a lot of people that are missing out on some seriously scary films! But I guess that’s why people like me exist, right? So I can show you what you are missing out on!

So here are 7 seriously creepy (and scary) short films that have stuck with me over the years! I won’t go into any great detail about the films listed below, as it’s best to go in knowing as little as possible.

But before I start the list, please, please (please?) watch these videos with headphones on … and in the dark if you can! Otherwise, you will definitely not get the full effect (trust me!). I’ve also purposely left out some of the more well-known horror short films, so I hope you haven’t seen at least a few of the ones I’ve listed below!

OK! Now on to getting scared!

The French Doors

The French Doors is probably the best one of the bunch to watch with the lights off.  The story involves a man doing renovations to his house, which includes installing a set of French doors to let more light in. Unfortunately for him, these sinister doors don’t quite do what they were intended for!

There Are Monsters

This short is particularly unnerving because of how harmless everything seems until … stuff happens.

BlinkyTM

Speaking of seemingly harmless, this little robot–OK I think I am just going to leave it at that. This is a very well shot and produced film with disturbing results. Enjoy!

The Ten Steps

The Ten Steps is a very simple concept that works very well in the right mood and setting. Also, this is another great short to watch with headphones on and in complete darkness, otherwise you might not find it nearly as unnerving or scary. Seriously, put them on. Turn off the lights … still waiting … Done? OK! Goooo!

Alma

This is more disturbing and creepy than it is scary. Alma is a very original and well done animated short that seems like a pleasant film at first, only to take a horrible turn at the end.

Still Life

This is one of my favorites on the list for sure, especially if you’re scared of mannequins (which I am; please hold me).

Recorded Live

Ahh a classic short-film from the 70s! What makes this film so unnerving is the fact that it was supposed to be played off as a comedy. At first, it might seem like this was the case because of the use of slap-stick, but towards the end you will find yourself starting to think “This … is kind of disturbing.” It was also made for a general audience (including children),  as these types of shorts were played in between full-featured movies airing on HBO. Do you remember Recorded Live?

Do you guys and gals have any lesser known (or well known!) ones to add to the list? I’m interested to hear what you have found!
