Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game is a Thing
For years, there have been rumors and speculation that a follow-up to the cult hit movie Killer Klowns from Outer Space is in production. The makers of the original movie, the Chiodo Brothers, have been dropping hints now and again for a long time. Of course, nothing has manifested. Then, another rumor that a television series might be coming along to explore this IP. There has been nothing but crickets, since. Whatever the case, the announcement for Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game dropped on everyone’s lap during this year’s Gamescom event. There are very few details to go by, but it appears to be yet another asymmetrical horror survival game. Needless to say, this is a natural fit for this game due to the number of characters and clowns the original movie had. Thus, the zaniness that’s associated with this IP makes for a rollicking good time in comparison to the other horror survival games that focus on grime, blood, and dread.
Make no mistake, there is still some creepiness to the Killer Klowns from Outer Space property. Mainly, this is due to the randomness of the clown’s killing methods and their overall design. They are evidently not human and are from another place. Talent from the Friday the 13th game is behind this development, and they clearly have a healthy respect and love of 80’s horror. However, in this particular title, matches are going to be a bit more epic in scope. There will be three clowns going against seven survivors. Each will have a class that will hold various abilities. The goal of the clowns is to harvest humans for consumption, while the other team will do whatever they can to sabotage their plans. It is a pretty simple concept. However, with this IPs unique vibe, this makes for a game that the gaming community hasn’t seen in a long time.
All They Want To Do Is Kill You
From the looks of things, it appears that this game will be taking place within the same timeline as the movie. Which was around 1988. So, analog technology reigned supreme during those days, and that’s the type of tech that survivors will need to deal with. The developers have some wild plans for future DLC for this game, which will build upon the mythos of the original movie. Mainly, in the guise of more characters, maps, customizations, and challenges. There won’t be combat in this game in the traditional sense. Instead, there will most likely be more of a “cat and mouse” dynamic to the 3v7 layout. There will be guns and knives, yes, but the clowns don’t go down easy. The setting of Killer Klowns from Outer Space took place in the quaint town of Crescent Cove and that’s where the maps will be built upon.
Places like neighborhoods, town squares, carnivals, and inside the clown’s ship itself will be maps available at launch. There will also be a revamped respawning system in Killer Klowns from Outer Space. In other asymmetrical horror survival games, once a player is down, then it’s game over. The developers have other plans which will put this game on a new level in this particular sub-genre. In the movie, the clowns could be defeated by popping their noses. Will that be a feature in this game? Most likely it will be. Just like in the movie, the clowns come in various sizes, designs, colors, and personalities. This will very much be a factor in this game, with every clown having varying stats, abilities, and move sets. Needless to say, this also applies to the human characters. They too will have their own classes, which will only be enhanced by the loot that they can scrounge up.
A Cosmic Circus
Now, with every match, the maps will be procedurally generated. So, no two matches will play out the same. Right now, it isn’t stipulated how big the maps will be and if there will be vehicles involved. The clowns in the movie got around in half-built bikes and tricycles. Perhaps, this will be a mechanic in the game? Only time will tell. Given that this PvPvE game will be 3v7, chances are that the maps will have plenty of room to explore. It is also possible that balloon animals can be made to sniff out the survivors. No doubt, that Killer Klowns from Outer Space has robust opportunities concerning gameplay elements. Given that this game is based on just one movie, there seems to be a surprising amount of depth to the mechanics.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space has apparently been under development for some time. The announcement of this game over at Gamescom was definitely a surprise, but a welcomed one. This movie has been building up a passionate fanbase for 30 years and the gaming community is buzzing with this announcement. There is a lot of potential here. Thus, this game can also provide an outlet to explore this IP and expand its overall lore. If this game sells well, then maybe it will spark new interest in producers to get a new movie off the ground. This IP is ripe for exploration and there is no telling where things could go from here. Whatever the case, this game might be just “another asymmetrical horror survival game” to some, but for others, it’s a chance to interact with an old movie that people love.
Giggling and Other Goodies
So, players can sign up for the Killer Klowns from Outer Space Beta right now. This game is scheduled to be released sometime early next year. It will be available for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Hopefully, the closed Beta will be coming down the pike sometime this year so players can get a good taste of how this game plays. Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game has the potential to give inject some life into a sub-genre that is getting a little stale. Hopefully, the gaming community jumps into this circus when it launches to keep it alive for a long time.
