Holy Crap, The Last of Us

I was planning on saving all E3 related posting until after the show was over and I could do some sort of an official countdown, but sorry, I couldn’t wait to post this gameplay footage from The Last of Us that premiered last night during Sony’s keynote address.
For those of you don’t know, The Last of Us is what Uncharted studio, Naughty Dog, is doing after that game has wrapped up. It’s in a post-apocalyptic city where you play a survivalist male escorting a teenage girl around. There are zombies, or something like zombies, lurking around, but other survivors can be even more dangerous, as seen in this video.
I’m still trying to understand exactly what I’m seeing here. The entire combat sequence seems like it’s straight out of a movie. That makes it look lovely a fluid, but it also has me wondering how much of encounters like this are scripted events, and how much is actual gameplay. If EVERY encounter is as dynamic as this one? That’s truly amazing. Check it out for yourself above, it’s a must see. More gameplay videos tomorrow or the next day most likely.
Pretty damn impressive but I’d expect as much from Naughty Dog. Another one worth keeping an eye on is Ubisoft’s Watch_Dogs, which I just learned of when I saw the E3 vid on YouTube earlier today!
Bloody hell, gaming has come a long way since my old C64 days!
Ugh, I’m so sick of zombies. I don’t care how good something looks, if it has zombies in it my eyes just glaze over and I go elsewhere. For the love of christ do something else.
Also let’s see how far into the ground me can beat the post-apocalyptic setting!
we*, not me
This is unreal! I’m not even making a clever pun. The incidental dialogue is fantastic. The way he curses when he’s hit or hears someone, the way they catch their breath when they stop moving. And I can’t believe it, but it looks like they avoided making escorting an NPC the most awkward, headache inducing exercise ever. It’s elegant, even. Is this what Uncharted is like? I got my PS3 too recently. I’ve got to catch up.
@Sara C.
Uncharted plays a lot like what you see here, fluid, cogent, dynamic and engaging.
I would recommend it immediately seeing as the first two will be cheap by now, and then you can decide about the third.
It is not really a zombie game. Within the game, there is this fungus that infects people and transforms them into some crazed killing creature. It transforms their head like the real fungus, Cordyceps. From there, we don’t know much else about the game.
The fungus, thankfully, only affects insects in the real world. But the premise stands for the game. Planet earth did a scene on them, I belive it is on YouTube somewhere.
Holy shit, that looks awesome! I really hope the gameplay plays like that; from what I’ve heard and seen, it’s similar to what Naughty Dog did with Uncharted.
The Last of Us, along with Uncharted, are the (only) two games that make me really want to buy a PS3.
This game is PS3 exclusive, right?
The developer has specifically said that this was no scripted.

Here’s one link. I was watching the G4 (i think) interview where he said that as well. There are other links searchable
What I want to know is WHY the protagonist immediately decides to attacks the other people. Wouldn’t it make more sense to try and join forces? (I assume this is explained in-story at an earlier point, but still.)
Uncharted 3 has a few fight scenes like this in the early going that are glorified quicktime events that bring a real cinematic feel at the expense of really feeling like a game. Thankfully, later sections involve more traditional gameplay (though there are times it still feels on rails during “free running” segments where there is only one path you can actually take).
I’m cautiously optimistic about this.
