Debate of the Day: What Would Your Deepest Desire-Based Superpower Be?
I’m not sure how many of you caught my review of the UK’s Misfits, but judging by the comments, quite a few of you might have.
It’s a fantastic dark comedy about a group of juvenile delinquents granted superpowers during a freak thunderstorm, but soon they find they’re not the only ones it affected.
The twist however, is that you slowly learn that the powers they receive are based on their deepest desires. For example, the disgraced athlete wishes he could undo his one life-derailing mistake, and is granted the power to turn back time. The sultry vixen girl always wanted attention from everyone, and now has the power to send anyone into a lust frenzy with a single touch. These powers get more bizarre and specific, like they meet a girl with alopecia who wishes everyone else knew what it felt like to be hairless. Her power makes people’s hair fallout.
So the question today is what YOUR deepest desire power would be? We’ve done the whole “Which superpower would you pick?” question here before, but we’ve never asked which superpower would pick YOU as is what happens in Misfits. I’m sticking with my previous claim of super agility (as that’s something I always wanted growing up as I wasn’t terribly adept at sports), and now I want to hear you all be honest. Since you’re anonymous, that shouldn’t be a problem?
I would have some kind of glass shattering super yell.
Even though I’ve pursed a career in the sciences and have a PhD in Chemistry. Deep down I’ve never felt I anywhere near as smart as I’d like to be. So probably photographic memory or super smart powers.

I hate being lied to. A fear of it perhaps… so possibly the power to know when people are telling the truth.
I spend about 6 hours a day listening to music for at least the last 12 years of my life and although I tried learning guitar and am quite an adept singer I think if my inner most weakness were to be given to me as a superpower I would probably become amazing at all instruments and singing.
That or I would gain powers of super confidence!

Most likely shapeshifting.
I think mine would be something like a pheromone that makes everyone like me. I’ve always been the type that wants everyone to like them. I don’t need to be the center of attention but I don’t want to be hated or disliked.
A power to kill with just a look. Every day get annoyed by the idiots around me a for a split second want to end them. I know I’d feel bad afterwards, but if its my Misfits power, its what I’d get.
I would probably have the power to communicate with everybody exactly what I am feeling. Too many times I am left unable to express fury, or disappointment, or hatred, or love, or kindness that I would really want to let someone know about, and I haven’t been able to.
Also shoot lightning from my hands, I’ve always wanted to do that.

My bidding is relatively harmless, not some “take over the world” type nonsense. I’ll leave that to Pinky & The Brain.

Since I’m an introvert by nature, but extrovert by demeanor, I’d probably wind up with some kind of Jekyll & Hyde change up, or would be abel to turn invisible or into “Captain Charisma”/glowing ball of light as the situation called for it…
I’d probably end up splitting into two people, both linked mentally to live both lives I always wanted. One as a guy, one as a girl.
I’m gonna check out this series, sounds pretty awesome.
I think my power would be immortality. At the age of 25 I’m already dreading turning 80 or something. I don’t want to live only 80 years. I want to see what happens in the year 2500. Probably has got something to do with my believes. I die and then… nothing. Would really hate when that happens.
My power would have some sort of electro power that makes me upload my consciousness into computers and other electronic devices. Immortality through electrons!! Lol j/k, I only say that because, I also, at 27, have begun thinking about death. As far as superpowers through insecurity…I’m a man that’s all of 5 foot 2, and have hated it everyday of my life. So I’m guessing my superpower would either be shapeshifting of some sort, or HULK SMASH territory.
Teleportation. I always want to me somewhere else other than where I am.
I’m pretty laid back and outgoing most of the time, but when I’m having a rare bad day, I’m severely controlling, strict, and arbitrary.
So, my dark desire power would probably be the ability to exert complete mind control over anyone. I’d probably exercise the power impulsively, like from a burst of anger or knee-jerk reaction. I don’t see my fictional self becoming a crafty manipulator; that’s not exactly a dark desire power to me.
Anyway, I’m probably thinking about this too much, but it’s a fun thought experiment.
My deepest desire would just make every last human being in the world bankrupt because I wanted to be richer than anybody else in the world but since I’m totally broke, then everybody else would just be poorer than me. And if everybody else is dirt poorer than me, I shall be considered the richest man on earth!!!! Bwahahahahaha!!!!!
Am I the only person bothered by the fact that the black chick’s superpower is lust? That’s definitely not a stereotype, not at all. What the fuck, TV?
I am constantly reading books, trying to get new skills that I see others have, so an ability to absorb traits others have would be mine. That and being able to pass on those skills (and intelligence) to others. Being able to make others do their own tech support (“Wahh…how do I install a printer?”) would be awesome.
i guess it’l be on the lines of having people believe whatever i tell them, since i love writing fiction and i need people to believe in my world/s…
That, and as a teacher i need those pesky kids to believe whatever educational lie i’m telling them, such as it’s important to get good grades.
Shapeshifting, if it’s a power that only effects me, otherwise, clearly the ability to shift all of reality, to make my imagination reality, and change the real into the imagined. In other words, the power of creation and destruction, being God. If I could do that, all other superpowers are at my disposal. Loophole!
I would have the power to make any sound I liked, like the guy from Police academy!
Mind reading. I just love to try and figure people out, even if they’re not very interesting. Actually, I can’t be too interested in people unless I know or figure something they wouldn’t want others to know, which obviously isn’t always the case. Because of this I’m pretty good at “reading” people, but some things you just can’t tell. Hey, this is fun but I sound a bit creepy.
Shape shifting, I always have trouble relating other people. With that I could be everyone.
My power whould probably be somthing like shapeshifting or illusions because I never really have been happy with the way I look thus I wear a lot of different colored contacts and change my haircolor alot. With either of thoes abilities I could change myself or how people see me instantly
Probably mind reading. That’s been a secret wish for a long time.
I would probably be like a super athlete with like acrobatic skills or telekinesis

Well, I’ve always wanted to fit in–be part of the crowd, not be the odd one out and all that. Which would translate well to invisibility.
On the other hand, I’ve also wished I was brave enough to do things that I never had the guts to do. In my mind this translates to some form of invulnerability–if I can’t get hurt then there’s nothing I’d ever need to worry about.
My superpower? The ability to force people to confront their hypocrisy.
Definitely the power to copy someone’s knowledge for myself permanently.
Super Powers? Well I’ve hated where I’ve lived my hole life, I always wanted to just be able to get up and GO somewhere else. And I’ve always thought it would be AWESOME to have wings, but I’ve always wanted to be a shape shifter, that way i could like turn in to a bird and fly away, or a fucking cheetah and like run somewhere far away.
I’ve always hated being really short, so my power would either be to grow about a foot taller or to make everybody I’m arguing with the instantly realise that OF COURSE I am correct in everything I am talking about.
