Among Trees is a Casual and Tranquil Survival Experience Now Available

Among Trees is a new survival game by FJRD Interactive which was released not too long ago. Players take control of a survivor trapped in the dank wilderness of a desolate forest that’s rich with life. Much like pretty much every other survival game on the market today, Among Trees take the concept of living off the land and adding some new twists of its own to this adventure. Players will need to chop down trees, build structures, craft tools and cook food to ensure the best outcome for this scenario. Additionally, living within the heart of the woods wouldn’t be without its fair share of threats lurking about. Not only will players need to hunt animals for survival, but they will need to combat ferocious predators during the process. Not to mention that players will also have the ability to make friends with some creatures, as well. These feature helps give Among Woods its own sense of identity and gives it a certain amount of charm.

Given the heavy situation that players will find themselves in, the art design of Among Woods is an interesting choice. The colorful simplicity of the design of this game lets it pop with vibrancy. It’s a refreshing look in comparison to the other uber-realistic survival games out there today. There is no “grittiness” in this game to be seen. Rather, everything has a more animated and somewhat otherworldly filter to it. The lighting is more elaborate, the foliage denser and the animal life is brimming with energy. Despite the dream-like quality of the artwork, there is no mistake in knowing that exploring, building, and working is the meat of this title. Among Trees is a survival game in every sense and there are all kinds of nuances and layers to dig into this game that unmistakenly earns its praises.

Furry Friends and Foes

As the game progresses, players will gradually unlock new mechanics to keep things fresh. This is most reflected in the campsite that will need to be built. Starting from a quaint little firepit and hut to ending up with a rather impressive cabin is one of the major joys in Among Trees. Players will constantly have this sense of accomplishment throughout this journey, which is the hallmark of any survival game. Given that the main character is a city folk that decided to leave the bustling stress of that environment and start anew in the woods, survival skills will be thin, to say the least. The very first thing that players will need to do is venture out into the unknown and gather; logs, planks, sticks, and twigs to start building up their hut. After this simple task is accomplished, the game will then offer a myriad of things to do, which the player can choose at their discretion.

There is a ton of items to collect in Among Trees. Even though most of the collectibles have a standard use, there are also secondary uses to them. One example is that players can pluck berries and eat them for nourishment. Alternatively, berries will also be needed to ink a hand-crafted map, among other things. All of the items in Among Trees aren’t as stagnant and straightforward as other titles. Players will really need to manage their inventory and decide on what they really need to focus on. Given the geographical layout of this terrain, the most dangerous enemy that players will encounter will be the bears prowling around. There is a stealth mechanic in Among Trees where they can hide in tall grass to avoid detection. This is the main way to get around predators and it’s rather rudimentary with its functionality.

Secrets of the Woods

There are two distinct modes in Among Trees, a “Standard Mode” and the “Zen Mode.” The Standard Mode is the base game that comes with various difficulties that players can choose from. The main crutch is the fact that there are predators in this mode which players will need to deal with. The Zen Mode is generally the same, except there are no enemies around. Players can just simply gather supplies and build their cabin at their leisure and enjoy the tranquil experience. When it comes to survival games, the standard fare is present in Among Trees. Things like eating for sustenance, drinking for thirst, and sleeping to heal and save the game are here. Other things like growing plants, avoiding cold weather, and constantly upgrading your repertoire is the core of this experience. The map can be quite vast in its scope and there are quite a few places to discover and explore. Given the serene design that this game has, it can be quite enjoyable just taking in the vistas and elements.

Later in the game, players can make friends with a fox. This companion can help with finding things and retrieving supplies. Thusly, players can interact with him whenever they please, giving them an opportunity to bond with this digital creature. The wildlife in Among Trees can be a bit lacking. There are bunnies, birds, bears, and the occasional buck. Even though the forest looks rather dream-like, it can feel a little empty while trekking through the trails. This game has a lot to offer, but the gameplay mechanics may be a little too simplistic for the more seasoned gamers out there. In any case, Among Woods has been out for several months now and it has garnered some rather nice reviews, for the most part. It knows what it is and it achieves it beautifully for what it has to offer.

Winding Wilds

The watercolor style of Among Trees is something to behold, for sure. It appears that this game was tailor-made for people who want an escape from their daily rat race to melt away their stress. There is no doubt that Among Trees offers just that, a dreamy outlet from everyday life. For someone who is looking for a light-hearted, casual survival experience, then this game may be what they are looking for. However, if a gamer is hankering for another Green Hell or even another Nautica, then maybe Among Trees is quite the right fit for them.
