88 of Hayao Miyazaki’s Beautiful Backgrounds from Spirited Away
There is simply no animator working today that can compare to Hayao Miyazaki and his Studio Ghibli. His stories are great, but it’s his animation that’s truly awe-inspiring, and perhaps there’s no better example of that than his work on Spirited Away.
Yes, the creatures and characters in that film and his others are fantastic, but it’s these gorgeous backgrounds that are simply out of this world. Sometimes quite literally. This gallery has a full eighty eight shots of the detail in these backgrounds, some pulled from the film, some from other artwork relating to the movie.
Check them all out below. You won’t be disappointed.
It’s really amazing what Miyazaki does. As one who has long worshiped at the altar of Ghibli, I have actually been the tiniest bit disappointed by his last two more Western-inspired films, but one thing that never disappoints is those backgrounds. Arriety and Ponyo may not have been quite as good as his previous work storywise, but visually Arriety was like watching a literal work of art and Ponyo had some of the most beautiful underwater scenery I’ve ever seen.
