State Fairs are a modern spectacle of culture (or a lack thereof), make-shift technology, and things that are fried, but sometimes it seems like State Fairs aren’t being completely honest with us….

Badass Picture of the Week: Conan the Puny

Published by Paul Tassi under Images,Movies

conan-lift.jpg

I didn’t think this segment would become a regular feature on this site, but the badass off-camera shots of classic movies just keep coming.

Here’s Wilt Chamberlain and Andre the Giant lifting up Arnold Schwarzenegger on the set of Conan the Destroyer, making him look like a little girly man in the process.

Arnold is 6’2″ (wow, I thought he was taller) with Chamberlain at 7’1″ and Andre at 7’0.” Craziness.

Is Funny People Good? Like, Is it Possible?

Published by Nattyb under Movies,News

Funny

Something tells me that this review is going to be the most spot on about this film.  Don’t get me wrong, I give Apatow all the credit in the world for the films he’s made.  Notably Knocked Up and 40 Year Old Virgin.  You have to admit those are pretty funny.

But if there’s one complaint I have about Apatow’s style is that it’s a little cheesy.  Like rather than go all out with something completely slapstick and disgusting, there has to be a sense of “sensitivity” involved.  It’s similar to the kind of crap you see in love stories.   Even uplifting to some respect.  While humor is still there, it’s kind of heartfelt.  And honestly I don’t really need that in a comedy.  Just go Todd Phillips a-la Old School and don’t mess around.

By the way, I’m referring to the films Apatow’s directed, not written or produced.  I mean the guy produced Superbad so I’m not off his side just yet.  But let’s be realistic.  This film is definitely an attempt to add drama to his resume.  I haven’t even seen the damned thing yet but you can just tell from the previews.

And the pairing of Sandler with this new generation?  I don’t like it.  I don’t like it at all.  When’s the last time Sandler was funny?  Honestly.  It was in Big Daddy.   This is like watching Jimmy Paige rock out with Puff Daddy in that crappy version of Kashmir years back.   Kind of vomit inducing actually.

100 bucks says Eric Bana is by far the best thing in this movie.

The ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ Trailer Will Divide You

Published by Paul Tassi under Uncategorized

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJbY3QrIifE

Well, what do you think. Is the Fantastic Mr. Fox trailer odd and pleasant, or strange and creepy? The animation is pretty unusual, as there’s not much clay involved despite it being stop motion, and everything is pretty jerky, and sometimes 2D.

I personally think it looks great. I’ve never seen anything like it, and Mr. Fox was one of my favorite books growing up. Although that can be said about any Roald Dahl book to be fair. I think the voicing actually fits with the characters, despite it being A-list, and I’m looking forward to this more than Where the Wild Things Are, that’s for sure. If only Arcade Fire was scoring this movie instead…

Seven Notable Celebrity Comebacks

Published by Nattyb under Movies

Wrestler

Hollywood is a mean place.  Actors get picked up and then spit out at the drop of a hat.  One bad movie, one bad publicity stunt and it could cost you your career.  It’s really that simple.  Hell if a producer thought you looked at him the wrong way a rumor could get spread and all of a sudden you are blacklisted.  Don’t you guys watch Entourage?  That was for you Madison.

But seriously, once you are cast out in Hollywood it’s extremely hard to get back in.   Which is why it’s pretty impressive that some actors actually get second lives.  It doesn’t happen that often but here are seven good cases of celebrity comeback.

The Complete ‘Freeman’s Mind’ Series Thus Far

Published by Paul Tassi under Lists,Video Games

gordon-freeman.jpg

I always look at funny game videos like Zero Punctuation or Angry Video Game Nerd and wonder why I didn’t think of that first. This is another one of those times.

Freeman’s Mind is an ongoing web series from Ross Scott, where he plays through Half Life and fills in the thoughts of the mute Gordon Freeman. It’s a simple concept. and can drag at times (especially near the beginning, but push through!), but after I finished them all (productive day), it’s one of the best things I’ve seen on the internet.

I’ve posted them all in a row for your viewing pleasure. He’s up to thirteen and a half episodes now, and no telling how far he’ll go.

Unreal Movie Review: Orphan

Published by Madison under Movies,Reviews

 orphan-movie-w02.jpg

I haven’t seen a truly scary horror movie in quite some time.  I really liked Drag Me to Hell, but that was because it was campy, not scary.  I didn’t think Orphan was going to be very scary – how scary can a little girl actually be? – but I decided to give a shot anyway.  On second thought, The Shining girls freak me out, so maybe that’s a bad rhetorical question.  Still, I was somewhat curious as to what was really wrong with Esther, and so off to see Orphan I went.  Unfortunately, Orphan wasn’t remotely scary, and the “twist” at the end was somewhat predictable.  But that didn’t make it any less preposterous.  Some good acting prevented Orhpan from being a total disaster, but suffice to say, it still wasn’t very good.  Keep reading for the full review; minor spoilers ahead (I promise not to reveal the twist).

The Morning Link: A Bachelor Video Game?

Published by Nattyb under Morning Link

Pappas

Because people can’t get enough of the 10 minutes of actual events that ABC crams into every hour of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” Interactive Entertainment will develop video games based on the reality dating shows.

I honestly have no comment on this.  I just can’t stop looking at Deanna Pappas.

But if you want a real opinion, read the rest.

‘A Serious Man’ Trailer is Seriously Funny

Published by Paul Tassi under Movies

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iggyFPls4w

Coen brothers comedy is  usually hit or miss for me. I loved Fargo, hated The Ladykillers. I loved O Brother Where Art Thou, hated Burn After Reading. I could go either way on Lebowski. In any case, the latest trailer has dropped for the next film I didn’t even know they were making, A Serious Man.

There’s not much to go on, other than the movie is about a nerdy Jewish guy whose life sucks. Doesn’t sound like it’d be that interesting, but the Coens sure know how to make one hell of a trailer.

Also, I think it’s fine to list like two of your hits in a trailer “From the directors of…” But like, seven? Come on, you’re just being dicks now.
