Why God Bless America is a Five-Star Film
American Super Stars
I like this as an overall backdrop to the narrative, and Bobcat Goldthwait really plays out one hell of a dark fantasy here.
As an aside, it disgusts me when the Hollywood machine takes advantage of certain people. Following the creative momentum of Josh Blue on Last Comic Standing was pretty inspiring to watch. Following the career of William Hung was not.
Frank and Roxy’s relationship
In this alternate universe, it appears Frank is the only intrinsically good person left on earth. And while he identifies with Roxy on certain levels, he doesn’t really have any real hope for her/their future, yet his defeatist attitude and acceptance of death is tempered with surprisingly tender moments. (Roxy’s overly-intellectual dialogue got annoying sometimes, but it in no way ruined the movie for me.) I absolutely love the irony that as much as Roxy despises the cookie-cutter pop culture around her, she’s still an immature, compulsive, naïve teenager at heart, and she exudes some of the same ignorance she so passionately wants to snuff out. I really enjoyed the dynamic between these two characters.
Ah yes, there was violence too
Make no mistake, this is a violent movie, and at first I was concerned the gratuity might lessen its impact for me. But Goldthwait (also the director) handles those scenes perfectly. Blood splatter-wise, I got exactly what I was expecting. The botched kills are brutally hilarious, and even that baby scene got away with making me feel not all that bad for the baby. (Although I recently dared myself to watch A Serbian Film, which practically makes this man-on-infant violence look like a Barney & Friends episode. Eesh.)

Overall, I really can’t say enough good things about God Bless America. I suspect many—if not all—Unreality regulars would really sink their teeth into this one, and even if I’m wrong, the film contains many interesting messages that a lot of people I know should hear.
I personally really enjoyed this movie. Society is taking a turn for the worse and this movie is a good revenge movie on society. The question is would he have gone wild if he didnt have…..well just watch the movie.
man, i’ll be damned if i pass this up. i watched the trailer long time ago and couldn’t believe that there are really people who are not looking to satisfy the shallow masses, even pit themselves against those masses and are not afraid to hold a mirror before them. this movie is a mothereffin’ epiphany.
It sounds like Hubert Selby Jr’s book “Waiting Period” adapted into a comedy film.
That said, it looks awesome.
“That baby scene?” As a newish dad I cant watch if its anything direct harm to a kid.
What’s really funny is that I discovered this movie while looking through all the upcoming films this year, getting ready to hate all of them for being targeted to the mouth-breathing masses. But then I found the trailer for God Bless America and I saw hope for humanity. It’s not the best movie I’ve ever seen, it does fall short in a number of areas. But it made me so happy to know I wasn’t so miserably alone in the world.
I simply loved this movie. Bobcat has done it again with this movie. The Alice Cooper spiel was a bit off but I think it was more of an attempt at giving the character a bit of depth but really it just came off kind of cheap and fake.
@JZ89
There is a baby who kind of blows up at the very beginning but it’s only a dream sequence and you don’t actually see any harm done to the baby only blood and confetti.
I have always been curious about Bobcat Goldthwaite and his works and i have to say he has made a masterpiece with this. It reminds me of a cross between Natural born killers and Harold and Maude with a touch of office space.
this movie is amazing, and while preachy, it was preaching something of worth, and honest. the world is filled with a sea of idiots, and it takes a smart person to stay afloat.
Great in concept, brilliant in areas. That said, I hated Roxy. Nobody caught the irony of an anti-Diablo Cody rant delivered by a character that could have walked straight out of one of her films?
