The Best and Worst Tim Burton Inspired Tattoos

timburton

Love him or hate him, Tim Burton is an inspirational creative genius! In light of Halloween coming up in less than a week I thought it might be fun to have a look at some awesome and some not so awesome tattoos inspired by the imaginative director/producer/writer/artist. I wanted to also make mention that I find it interesting that people still think the Nightmare Before Christmas was directed by Tim Burton. Fun fact for you – IT WASN’T! Time and time again I hear people say how that’s their favorite movie by Tim Burton. Henry Selick, the same dude who put together Coraline and James and the Giant Peach was the guy behind the camera. Tim helped to produce Nightmare and just happened to be the one who came up with the look and a lot of the character designs for the film. But enough about all that – let’s get our skin and ink on!

I will never stop being amazed at what people will permanently etch into their bodies. Don’t get me wrong, I have a very large tattoo on my back that I designed and will forever treasure and I’m sure that some might question it. Yet, sometimes I can’t help but wonder if a select few of these individuals were drunk, or just had really bad friends urging them to go get these tattoos.

The Good

I apologize for not listing the artists behind these tattoos – they deserve the credit for this fantastic artwork. I just didn’t want to try and stalk them through the interwebs to try and find their information to post. If you see your art displayed please let me know and I’ll list your name next to the image!

This is the best example of the Cheshire Cat that I could find. There were plenty out there, one in particular done with glow in the dark ink even! This one was by far the best representation though.

Clearly the coolest version of Jack that I could find doing a Google image search. I like the originality behind this as well as the use of color. (most of the ones I found for Jack were in black and white)

I’m not sure why you would want Edward on your arm your entire life, but if I was going to have him on me forever, I’d make damn sure it would look like this.

The amount of detail in this Penguin tattoo is impressive! I just had to make sure I did something about this guy’s nipple so I wouldn’t offend any of our viewers out there.

The ever eccentric Willy Wonka is a perfect subject for a tattoo – don’t you think? If anything the artist nailed this representation with all the right color and detail.

The Ugly

Now granted, I normally side on the thought that art is completely subjective. Meaning all art is personal on some level. With that said, I consider some of the following pictures to be more on the “WTF were you thinking” side of things than anything else.

Yeah – pound it bro!

Jack looks … ok, but WTF did they do to Sally!?

tattoobad3

Oh dear god!?

tattoobad4

Just to prove a point – above you had a great representation of the Cheshire Cat … here…well…not so much.

I wish this wasn’t real.

There were plenty more examples of good and bad tats but I had to cut myself off at some point. I guess I never truly understood that there were so many crazy Tim Burton fans out there – even those that would want to put his face on their skin!? I even found James and the Giant Peach, Mars Attacks and Frankenweenie!? I think for another post down the line I should interview a few of these artists or people who have said tattoos and find out their intentions. Were they high or did one of these films change their life in such a way that they felt compelled to adorn their bodies with his creations? To each their own I suppose.

  1. I actually like some of the “bad” ones. That Chesire cat one is terrifying (which is good in my world) and I kind of like Sally’s bedroom eyes. The top half of the leg one is cool, but it runs out of steam before it runs out of leg. Should have cut it off at the knee.

    1. Yeah – art is hard to warrant a “good” / “bad” score, especially with tattoos since they typically have some meaning behind them for the owner.
