The Rains of Castamere

So I know we had a little bit of a discussion about this song on yesterday’s Jason Yang post, but Flynn pointed me in the direction of this video by Malukah. It’s The Rains of Castamere, but one made before Game of Thrones did their own version of it. Meaning she invented the music from the words of the books alone, which is pretty impressive.

I actually like hers better than the official version I linked to yesterday. I’m hoping they’ll use a version closer to this one when the Castemere-titled episode finally airs this season in a few weeks. And I won’t say any more than that…

  1. You might want to remove the bit about what one of the last episodes is called. The title kind of gives away what might happen.

Are you sure this was made before the show? Because the tune sounds very similar to the show. I have to say that I prefer the National’s version, that voice is haunting.

  2. You’re kidding right? She covered the song, it’s the EXACT SAME SONG. Look in her description:

Guys, sorry about the small videos that are shaky and weird. I had a bunch of camera issues that I hope to fix by the next cover!

**Some comments on this video may have spoilers! Careful about reading them if you’re not caught up with all the books so far.**

Don’t know about you, but that second to last episode of Game of Thrones was my favorite of the season. And as soon as I heard this song by The National, I knew I wanted to make a cover of it. 🙂

She published this about FIVE MONTHS after it happened on the TV show.

  3. Yeah, it sounds like she just mixin’ it up a bit.

I think the nailed “The Rains of Castamere,” it’s dirge-like qualities fit the story of the song so well.

  4. Good performance but the song is supposed to convey a sense of dread, a sense of warning…don’t cross Tywin Lannister. Good job, good effort but I’ll take The National version every time.

  5. Dude. Revealing upcoming episode titles…not cool. It’s more fun to have non-readers discover these things themselves through the show.

(For reference, I’ve read all the books, so I’m not spoiled.)

    1. Nothing is actually being revealed here? Episode titles are public knowledge? Or at least they are before you hit play on your DVR? I don’t understand. The only people who think talking about this song is a spoiler are those who have read the books.

  6. It’s not really the song title but the fact that one of the last episodes is called “The Rains of Castamere.” I haven’t read the books and it makes me assume that the Lannisters are going to have a victory of some sort or one of their enemies will get killed. But honestly, it’s only a minor thing. Just be extra careful I guess. 🙂

  7. it was great, but I too prefer the The National version.

but The Bear and the Maiden Fair version that was on the show was reaaaaally terrible compared to some on youtube
