The Evolution of Surf

Evolution of Surfing

Alright, so once Pokemon X and Y come out, I’m finally going to play the game again instead of just having it be a running joke on the site like it’s been for the last five years or so. I own a 3DS, and finally, I’ll be able to catch up with the series and probably have zero idea what the hell is going on.

The above GIF caught my eye, as it chronicles the evolution of a singular move over the years across five different generations of Pokemon. Things have advanced, I guess, though not as much as I would have liked. Ie, I’m still waiting for that elusive console Pokemon game that Nintendo refuses to make for unknown reasons.

Hey, at least you’re not always riding around on a Lapras anymore.

  1. I hated the music in silver/gold, the radio was useless because it always turned off when in a new area, an it didn’t stay on after a battle, but the surfing music has improved

  2. It’s pokemon…you don’t miss anything, each gen is it’s own little world, though they are all connected in some way.

Every game acts like you’re a 10 year old kid who’s never played pokemon and gives you tutorials.

  3. I’m not sure if that last one is X or Y but if you ride a Lapras in the game, you’ll be shown actually riding a Lapras on the water. I think that’s the only pokemon it works with though.

    1. That’s Black and White.

So far everything else I’ve tried has been generic the generic model. I really hoped Snorlax would show, I so wanted to Surf a Snorlax.

  5. Yeah, in X and Y you’re actually given a Lapras to make use of the whole ‘You’re actually shown riding a Lapras’ bit. It’s a nice showcase of the graphics, but it is the only Pokémon they created a surf model for.

  6. No, you are not shown a Lapras in X or Y regardless it hasn’t been that way in a very long time, they just shown sort of wailmer looking shadow in the water

    1. That’s if you use another pokemon. However, if you specifically use Lapras it will show its model on the water as opposed to the typical round shadow in previous generations.
