The Amazing Unpublished Art of the Harry Potter Books
It makes me feel ancient to know that I started reading the Harry Potter books close to fifteen years ago. It’s a series I love unashamedly to this day, and I credit it with inspiring me to become a writer in some form or another. Writing my own books now, even if I get rejected, I remember that JK Rowling was turned down by dozens of publishers before someone took a chance on her series. Not that I have a fraction of her talent, but it’s an uplifting thought when I’m feeling down.
Anyway, if you’re either in the US, the UK or overseas, you probably had your own variants of cover art from the Harry Potter series, images that are still easily pictured in your mind today. But it turns out there was much, much more art drawn by the same artist, Mary GrandPre, that simply was never able to be used. The unpublished pieces are now surfacing, and you can check them out in the gallery below.
They feature some of the most epic and touching moments of the series, and the one above struck me as particularly sad when Harry looks into the Mirror of Erised and sees his dead family, which is what he wants more than anything else in the world. But there’s plenty of flying around on broomsticks and griffins too below. See for yourself:
