The 10 Highest Rated Video Games Of 2021 According To Metacritic

2021 has been a great year for games, with many top IPs releasing new games this year including the likes of Halo, Forza, and Resident Evil. But, which ones were the best? Here are the top 10 highest-rated games of 2021 according to their Metacritic scores. It is worth noting that some games on this list include ports and rereleases of previously released games, but they were reviewed as new entries which therefore means they are eligible for this list.

10. Chicory: A Colorful Tale – 90/100

Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a fun top-down adventure game that takes place in a coloring book. The game is very similar to many 16-bit style adventure games, but its art style is really what sets it apart from the rest, coupled with good gameplay and incredibly well-designed puzzles.

9. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 – 90/100

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is a remake of the original PS1 classics, bringing them into the modern day with up-to-date graphics and gameplay mechanics seen in later entries in the series. Following a release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and then a Nintendo Switch port, the game is now available on PS5 and Xbox Series X. If you’re over the age of 25 you likely played the originals back upon their original releases, and this is the perfect hit of nostalgia that you need right now.

8. Microsoft Flight Simulator – 90/100

Microsoft Flight Simulator was released on PC in 2020, and it has now seen a release on the Xbox Series X in 2021. The game features a 1:1 recreation of the entire Earth thanks to Bing Maps, which means that players can fly in real-world flights that last just as long, giving gamers the most realistic flying experience that doesn’t involve stepping in an actual plane.

7. Psychonauts 2 – 91/100

Psychonauts 2 is the first entry in the series in 15 years, which led many to believe that it either wouldn’t live up to expectations or that players simply wouldn’t care due to not having an attachment to the franchise. We were wrong because Psychonauts 2 is one of the best designed games this year and shows that the gaming world still has room for the Psychonauts IP and we hope this isn’t the last time we see an entry in the series.

6. Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker – 92/100

Final Fantasy XIV’s long-awaited expansion pack, Endwalker, was finally released in December 2021, after having been delayed by a few weeks. Although it is an expansion pack it still deserves an entry on this list due to how expansive it is and how much it adds to the game and story. If you’ve been on the fence about whether you need another monthly subscription in your life, now is a perfect time to find out as Final Fantasy XIV is in the best state that it has ever been.

5. Forza Horizon 5 – 92/100

The Forza series is one of the most popular racing franchises in gaming, with the Motorsport series being a more traditional racing simulator, while the Horizon series is more of an open-world arcade-style game. Forza Horizon 5 is the latest entry in the series, with the previous game releasing back in 2018. This time, players head to Mexico to race across the desert, jungle, cities, and even a volcano. The game is one of the best-looking games available to date, especially when taking advantage of the Xbox Series X or new Nvidia and AMD GPUs.

4. Hades – 93/100

Another rerelease on this list, but it is worth it. Hades is a rogue-like dungeon crawler that was first released back in 2018, with the game finally seeing a port on the Xbox Series X and PS5 this year. Hades has always been beloved by fans since it was initially released, and now with the game being available on all current platforms, there is no better time to finally check it out than now.

3. Tetris Effect: Connected – 95/100

Tetris Effect: Connected was released on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S in November 2020, and the game saw a release on the Nintendo Switch earlier this year, which is the version mentioned in this list. The game features the classic Tetris style of gameplay, but graphically it is very trippy and can be quite hard to look at sometimes. But, if you enjoy playing Tetris, and who doesn’t? then this is a must-play game.

2. The House In Fata Morgana – Dreams Of The Revenants Edition – 97/100

The House In Fata Morgana – Dreams Of The Revenants Edition is a game that will likely fly under the radar of many people this year. Visual novel games aren’t for everyone so it is understandable. But, if you are the sort of player that enjoys this style of game then it doesn’t really get any better than The House In Fata Morgana – Dreams Of The Revenants Edition.

1. Disco Elysium: The Final Cut – 97/100

Like many games on this list, this entry is yet another rerelease. Disco Elysium: The Final Cut serves as a Game of the Year style of game, with all of the extra content released post-launch is included, giving players the full experience in one package. Disco Elysium is an RPG that sees the player take on the role of a detective as they interrogate unforgettable characters, crack murders or take bribes, with the ability to be a hero or an absolute disaster of a human being. It isn’t often that we see a game score this high on Metacritic, with only four other games scoring a 98 or higher, and it is easy to see why. One Steam user reviewed the game saying “It is not a game, it is an experience.”
