So We’re Getting a Deus Ex Movie Huh?
I’m not quite sure how I feel about the news that my Game of the Year 2011 is getting its own feature film adaptation. Deus Ex: Human Revolution had a look, sound and feel all its own, and felt incredible cinematic from start to finish. That begs the question, does it actually NEED a movie to FEEL like a movie?
The same can be said for many games with great plots. Mass Effect was like an epic movie trilogy despite existing as a game. Would a film adaptation serve it better, or worse? It’s tough to say because there seems to be a clear issue with trying to make ANY video game a movie. At best, you get the original Resident Evil, at worst, you get Doom and Dead or Alive. But really, you shouldn’t think Doom or Dead or Alive would make good movies in the first place.
I have some hopes that this could turn out well. Give it to someone who knows what they’re doing (Wachowskis, Duncan Jones) and it could be fantastic. Give it to someone who doesn’t give a shit, and it won’t be.
If its based on the latest, no thanks. Human Rev was pretty lame. Had a good ambiance, sure, though borrowed heavily from Bladerunner & other dark Sci-fi. But graphics wise it looks about 5-8 years old, play control was horrible for a modern FPS, and the upgrades & silent kills were just lame. I remember the orig was pretty interesting but that was a while ago, not sure if its held up well.
IF they could get good writer/director combos on board (Whedon, Raimi, Nolan, del Torro, Jackson) I would be all for it. But usually they seem to farm it out to someone doesn’t know or knows for the wrong reasons. Just keep Uwe & Bay far, far away.
I thought Deuce Ex Human Rev was a sequel? Why make a movie based off the sequel to a game? Of course I’ve never followed these games so I can’t really talk.
Human Revolution was the prequel to Deus Ex 1.
Wachowskis? Are you kidding me? That would be…oh god…let’s put it that way – how about no
i didn’t ask for this.

On a side-note, the Adam Jensen cosplay above looks terrible, he looks like a juvenile, clean-shaved, anime-ish version of the character. The original Adam Jensen looks way rougher, a bit like the old-school cliché of a film noir detective.
