Mondo Has Awesome Man of Steel Posters, Naturally

I’m already in the early stages of mourning as I prepare to be let down by Man of Steel, currently sitting at a rotten 59% on RT. Perhaps the critics are wrong and it’s amazing, but the site, by in large, paints a pretty accurate picture when it comes to movies like this. Though it’s especially worrying given that these same critics scored Superman Returns a 75%.

ANYWAY, I still wanted to feature these rather fantastic prints from Mondo that they’ve crafted for the film. Even if it doesn’t pan out, that doesn’t make the art on these any less badass. You can buy them for a limited time starting yesterday I believe, and this page has more info about that. That’s Martin Ansin’s design above, but there’s one more below from Ken Taylor.

Here’s to hoping the critics are wrong. I’ll find out in a few hours.

  1. I’m not paying a lot of attention to that 59%, because glancing at the reviews, it seems to be the typical case of looking at the 1978 film with nostalgia and praising how witty and lighthearted it was, whereas this new film is bleak and loud and charmless. I don’t know, but I’m guessing young viewers will be pleased with the film, in the same degree they usually find the 1978 version cheesy and lame, although no critic will ever call it that because it’s such and inconic film. Anyway, I think audience scores will be higher.

  2. I saw the midnight show last night and absolutely loved it. Sure, like every single movie ever made there are some flaws and plot holes, etc. As a whole, thought it was SUPREMELY entertaining and just all around fun to watch. He’s really never been portrayed this way on film and it just works. Plus Cavill looks the part and has a tiny bit of Reeves iconic look in some parts. Very well done and Snyder does it again with an absolutely stunning looking movie. I’d certainly give it an A and recommend it to any and all.

The problem with Man of Steel is… well, there are a few. The biggest, though, is that the movie sorta takes for granted that you care about these people as opposed to earning the connection from the ground up. There are some spoiler-y things involved, too, that I found to be rather missing the point of the character or simply a klutzy handling of certain dramatic conceits.

Zod and Jor-El are the movie’s most compelling characters. It’s no coincidence that they are also the ones driving the vast majority of the story forward.

The truth is there are several things the older movie simply does better, in this case. It’s short-sighted to dismiss its worth because of a tonal preference — in effect, you are committing the same sin you claim these reviewers are. Or maybe I’m misreading your comment.

Now, what this results in, from people who aren’t chasing the problem down to its roots, is the idea that the old movie was better BECAUSE of a tonal difference. There is one, but it’s not the reason that the movie isn’t connecting. You saw how quickly people forgot about the ’89 Batman when presented with a credible, dramatically enthralling alternative. Some of the critics just aren’t sussing out the actual story missteps this movie makes, which is frustrating but still legitimately indicative of problems.

That said, MoS has some pretty clear virtues that more or less balance out its faults to make it a GOOD movie, but I pretty much reject the notion that it’s truly a GREAT one. Perhaps another viewing will change my mind, but I doubt it.

  4. NO. Do not pay attention to the rotten tomatoes rating. Rotten tomatoes does not account for hype and expectation. Is it the Dark Knight? No, but it WILL kick your ass. Superman Returns is not even in the same league. Those ratings have to be taken into context. When a film markets and builds hype as much as MoS did, the bar is higher and the critical backlash is inevitable unless it truly delivers something amazing. It should be telling that the audience approval rating of the film is much much higher than the critics’.

  5. @ David R – I have not seen the film (thanks for keeping it spoiler-free), so I have no idea how good it is. I was just venturing a guess based on early reviews, since so many of them based their low ratings in comparissons with the Donner films and lack of whimsy, when I think most fans are expecting the opposite. I don’t think “charm” was anywhere near the top of fans whislists for a new Supes film.

I do like the Donner films myself, but you have to agree they aren’t that well-liked by the younger audiences. And really, as well-paced and acted as they were, the humour seems eye-rolling now, so you can’t blame them. So it’s like if you read reviews for a Batman movie, and the bulk of them were “But where are the bat-dances and the shark-repellent and the FUN?!!”, you can’t say the critics are wrong, but it doesn’t make you think you won’t like the film either. Anyway, like you said, MoS can suck in its own terms and tone, and that should be the focus of the discussion. I’ll have to see it myself.

  6. Ah man, this is why having the site take weekends off sucks. The movie comes out on Friday and we can’t properly discuss it until Monday! I just got back from it and it was cool….I guess. But it had a distinct lack of good character development. Brainiac would have been a better fit as a villain considering the tech Zod uncorked would have worked better with that character. Snyder and Goyer didn’t really seem to give a crap about the characters, but the action and scope were really impressive and I thought the way it was paced with the flashbacks was pretty great. Not a definitive Superman film by any means (all of the recent animated ones are better) but definitely the best one we’ve seen in theaters since Superman II so I’ll take it.

  7. I do look at RT critic scores, but I’ve found that the user rating is usually more in line with my opinions of a movie.

Really I trust the opinions of regular moviegoers like me over critics who are looking at aspects that would ruin the experience in ways that don’t bother me

    So case in point:

Man of Steel’s RT Critic Rating – 56%
Man of Steel’s RT User Rating – 82%

    Which do you trust?
