George RR Martin, Beetle Smasher
SHOW SPOILERS IF YOU LOOK TOO CLOSELY, AVERT THINE EYES!
It’s generally agreed upon that the point of Tyrion’s little “beetle crushing” speech before his trial by combat was that the strong will simply always crush the weak without rhyme or reason, especially people like his father having it out for little beetles like him.
But one artist took that to mean something a bit different, namely that George RR Martin is the ultimate beetle smasher, killing off beloved (and occasionally hated) characters at will.

Accurate.
But I think it’s his method of discovering who is made of clay, and who is steel.
I read a lot of fantasy books, by a lot of authors who all kill of characters left, right and center. Just look at Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law and The Heroes, he kills of everyone including people that are lovable characters. But as soon as it’s made visual and the illiterate masses see the deaths, people lose their minds and turn Martin into some kind of monster.
