The future can be scary. It’s unknown and pretty impossible to predict with certainty. However, the
possible future is one of the greatest sources of our geek culture. We have seen the downfall of mankind
as well as society’s ascent into nobility.

This week’s Geek Wisdom quote comes from the latter. And it comes from the good doctor aboard the
(original) USS Enterprise.

The Quote: “I’m a doctor, not a…”

The story behind the quote: The Star Trek universe is set in a time where the human race has started
to explore the vast reaches of the final frontier: space. The brainchild of visionary Gene Rodenberry, the
original series focused on the adventures of the crew on the USS Enterprise. Led by Captain James T.
Kirk, they are on a mission to explore strange new world, seek out new life and new civilizations and to
boldly go where… you probably know the rest so let’s get right to it.

The ship’s doctor, Leonard McCoy, who is affectionately nicknamed Bones, is regularly put into situations
where he is called upon to do odd things. When this happens, he exasperatedly exclaims, as the video
above shows, that he is a doctor and that he really shouldn’t be doing those weird things. What the clip
doesn’t show is that McCoy still performs the task, albeit with a bit of discontent.

The Geek Wisdom we can take from it: There are definitely going to be times when we will be asked
to try something new. It may be something that we strongly feel that we won’t like. However, we have to
try and do things outside of our comfort zone so that we can learn and experience new things. We may
initially not want to do these new things since it’s something new and we’re unsure how to do it. Unless
we actually try those things, there’s really no way to find out if they’re as bad as we think they are.

The only way we can grow is to add to our life experiences and learn from them. If we try something new
and we don’t like it, at least we’ll know for sure and we don’t miss out.
