True Blood Episode 2.5 Review

 tbtitle.png

In Episode 5 of Season 2, True Blood really hits its stride.  Mysteries have become unraveled and motivations have been revealed.  Best of all, we finally got to learn where – or rather, when – Eric Northman comes from.  I don’t know about you, but I thought that Episode 5 was the best of the season thus far, and quite possible the best episode we’ve seen to date.  A ton went down, so let’s get to it.  Keep reading for the full review of True Blood Episode 2.5.  As always, there will be spoilers.

Sookie, Bill, and Eric are still in Dallas, staying at a vampire hotel and trying to figure out who is responsible for the disappearance of Dallas’ sheriff, Godric.  Sookie is fascinated that she’s met another telepath – Barry – but he is more than hesitant to discuss his ability with her.  Barry is terrified that if the vampires ever discover that he can hear thoughts, he’ll be sucked dry.  As to why he surrounds himself with vampires, well, it’s only in the company of vampires that Barry can work in silence, so to speak.  He’s not a real big part of the show now, but as another telepath, I imagine there’ll be some big things for Barry down the road.

Sookie, Bill, and Eric meet up with some crazy Dallas vamps named Stan and Isabel, both of whom are imbeciles.   You’d think that in an area where everyone is scared of vamps, and those vamps have reputations not to be f*cked with, that the higher-ups would be somewhat sophisticated.  But that isn’t the case, as all Stan and Isabel can do is bicker while Eric grows more and more frustrated.  I’ve always thought that Eric was pretty scary when calm and collected, but this new, frustrated side of Eric is even scarier.  I’m kind of hoping he tears someone (else) to shreds.

And speaking of Eric, we finally learn why he’s so interested in Godric’s whereabouts.  If this episode is indeed the best True Blood has had, then it’s mainly because of the scene that reveals Eric’s origin.  It turns out, as has been hinted at in the past, that Eric was a fierce Viking warrior.  Mortally wounded, he was helpless to defend his men against Godric…Eric’s maker.  Godric makes quick work of Eric’s men, but he is completely fascinated with Eric’s warlike persona and admires the mortal’s taste for death.  By turning Eric and inviting him to accompany death, Godric provides him with the ultimate gift: Life.  At first glance, Godric looked like a primal savage, but after hearing (or rather, reading) him speak, it became apparent that he was well-traveled and quite knowledgeable.  I wonder if Godric will turn up again.  I hope so.

Sookie and Bill are more of a couple than ever, but I think Sookie’s getting a little bit tired of Bill trying to protect her “for her own good.”  It looks as though she’s wearing the pants in the relationship.  And call me sappy, but I do enjoy the scenes with Bill and Sookie.  I don’t want True Blood  to become Twilight (dear God, no, I’d rather contract syphilis), but the romance between the two characters helps to make everything else around them matter just a little bit more.

Jason continues to kick ass for the Fellowship, and by helping his struggling teammate, established himself as the camp’s leader.  Steve shows Jason a room full of some pretty heavy duty anti-vampire weapons, and Sarah shows her appreciation bu, um, washing Jason below the waist.  It was only a matter of time before that happened.  With Eric’s decision to have Sookie infiltrate the Fellowship of the Sun, I’m very curious as to how she’ll react when she finds out how involved Jason is.  It’s not going to be pretty.

Back in Bon Temps, Lafayette got his old job back from Sam, but was unfortunately in just one scene.  What to do with Lafayette next?  Please just make him a vampire; he’d be perfect.  Maryann, it turns out, can do more than work people into a dancing orgy.  She can apparently control emotions, or something, and in an effort to get Tara to come crawling back to her, she somehow turns the entire bar of Merlotte’s against Tara.  Naturally, it works.  As for Sam and Daphne: Daphne is also a shapeshifter and is all over Sam’s junk, but there’s just no chance she’s innocent.  By the way, I know Sam isn’t an alpha (as Maryann said) and is normally pretty timid (although he has definitely stepped up to protect Sookie in the past), but why the hell hasn’t he said anything to Daphne about the three gigantic scratches down her back?  I would think that’d come up in conversation eventually.

And oh yeah, for some reason, Bill’s maker is in Dallas.

What did you all think?  Were you as blown away by the “Eric’s origin” scene as I was?  What’s going on with Daphne?

  1. I for one want more of the Jessica Hoyt relationship. I dunno though, ive got a feeling its only a matter of time before something bad happens between them.
    Just far too sweet to be able to last long.

  2. I’m not really interested in Barry, actually, the Sookie/Bill relationship scenes are getting tiresome as well. However, all the other storylines are amazing.

    It was cool finally to see Godric, and kind of funny to hear him speak Swedish with an obvious Danish accent, but most people probably won’t get that. 😉 It was awesome to see the flash back, I love the whole scandinavian/Norse Mythology part.

    I didn’t get that the woman in the end is Bill’s maker, nice spotted.

    Also, Daphne is hot.

  3. I agree with Gavis..I want to see more of Hoyt and Jessica..they are just too cute for words..
    I am so tired of Sookie and her ditzy-ness..it makes me cry..and I want to see more of the strong, commanding Bill form a few episodes ago..he needs to grow a spine..
    I LOVED the flashback scene…it made me smile because I LOVE Norse mythology and vikings..and an angsty Eric is quite nice^^
    More Lafayette is definitely nessecary..preferably with Eric..the two of them crack me up^^
    Daphne is up to something..I can feel it..
    Dapne and her little gang need to move on to another town..Eggs is really starting to bug me..but I want to know about Karl..which is weird..

    Yeah, more Jessica/Hoyt is a necessity. It’s amazing how much she annoyed me and how much I enjoy her now. Hoyt I think everyone always liked.

    @ Marcus

    You’ll have to forgive me if my recognition of Swedish/Danish accents is poor. The mythology aspect of that scene was great; like I said, my favorite scene in the series to date.

    Daphne is indeed hot.

    @orlisnjangel

    You have to admit, Eggs’ pitch to Tara about family was pretty convincing…

  5. I agree that Sookie is getting a little too saccharine in her scenes with Bill. I want to see more Bill “As your maker I command you” Compton in action.

    Maybe I’m reading in too much, but could Erik and Godric have been… lovers??

  6. I thought it was hilarious when Daphne asked Terry for an iced tea, and his dilemma about getting her one in case he pissed Darlene off. I was afraid he was gonna snap. I have my reservations about Terry, and his obvious PTSD. It was still amusing though.

    I totally agree about the scars on Daphne’s back. Even the most timid person would yell WTF when they saw those. And why did Daphne get attacked in the first place? I hope they go further in to that.

    Who was that with Sookie going to the camp in next week’s previews? I couldn’t tell, and the fact that HBO shoves so much shit into a 30 second clip, I almost have an aneurysm trying to figure out anything.

  7. @ Laura

    Terry is a great side character, I thought he was going to snap, too. I wonder if he’s completely human. I hope so; you can only have so many creatures running around.

    I try not to pay too much attention to the previews; I don’t want any surprises given away…that said, I did watch and noticed that guy with Sookie. It wasn’t Barry, right?

  8. @ Madison

    I don’t know…It would be nice if there was something there between Eric and Goddric…but that’s just me..I’m a little weird XD

    Good point, but I think the writers could argue with you on that. Isn’t Godric actually from Rome/Roman times.

    So even if he spoke Swedish with a Danish accent, it could be said that he’s traveled the world from another region and probably learned Swedish when he ended up where ever it is he found Eric.

    Side note on age:
    Eric = 1000 yrs
    Godric = 2000 + yrs

  10. @ Michael 80 and Marcus

    i figured it out..the actor who plays Godric (Allan Hyde) is from Denmark…so that could explain the Danish-accented Swedish in a real world sense( i never would have picked up the accent…never really hear Danish before XD)

  11. I don’t think it was Barry. I guess we will find out soon enough. I was going to say maybe some guy got glamoured in to going in with Sookie, but I don’t think that’s how it works.

    Oh yeah, that’s true, that actually just makes it more cool. 😀 I hope we get to hear speak other languages too.

    Yup, I know, I’ve been waiting eagerly to see him on the show, because my roommate knows him. It’s amazing to see him go from a small, Danish actor with small parts in crappy sitcoms to a role in an HBO series.

  13. What I wanna know is if they’ll ever show who made/turned Godric!? Can you guys imagine that story?!?!

    What if it was Armand…jk! Now I’m just dreaming out loud!

  14. the ‘eric’s origin’ scene was also my favorite from this episode. I do have a feeling that Eric and Godric may have been more than friends, and the ‘there will be women thing is a cover.’

    The Sookie and Bill “cutesy” scenes are starting to get on my nerves since Sookie still hasn’t realized that when ever she wanders off on her own, something tries to kill her. The way that she was badgering the other telepath to become best buds was also annoying. There’s a huge difference between a friendly person and someone who makes you say “god lady, get away from me please.”

    You didn’t mention that the telepath bellboy mysteriously disappeared. I think he’ll pop up again. He was so paranoid something was going to happen to him that something MUST have.

  15. @ keke

    Nah, I don’t think the “women” line was a cover for Eric. Not that I’d really care either way, but I just don’t see him being into dudes.

    I am pretty sure Barry (the telepath bellboy) will turn up soon. Whether it’s alive or dead remains to be seen.
