Ask Us Your Questions for Tonight’s Live Podcast About PS4 vs. Xbox One and E3
Yesterday marked a pretty significant day for the industry as four major press conferences at E3 showed us what the near future of video games will look like. The biggest story was of course the already heated PS4 vs. Xbox One rivalry, and it was an incredible thing to witness, making for one of the most exciting E3s in years.
Tonight at 7 EDT, Benny Bedlam and I will be doing a live podcast to discuss the games of E3, and the battle between Sony and Microsoft. You can check back here around then where I’ll embed the audio, but until then, we’d love for you to ask us some questions that we can discuss on air. Just leave them as comments on this post, and they can be related to E3, or really anything having to do with gaming in general. What would you like to talk about at the dawn of the new console generation? Let us know, and we’ll see you tonight.
The biggest thing I’d like to get your take on – and I apologize if you’ve already covered this either here or on Forbes – is Microsoft’s stance on “almost always-on” and them not addressing it at E3. And are the games that they announced for the Xbone launch enough to maybe take that sting away? Also I’d like to hear about both your thoughts on Sony then coming out with their used-game strategy and price point.
Xbox Ones is coming in November, what impact will it have whose console comes out first have? that is to say what will happen if Sony’s launches in December or October. They did say PS4 is coming out Holiday season so that sounds like a December release for me.
Several questions:
1) Paul, since you were an econ guy for a while, you’ll at least know about oligopoly pricing (monopoly pricing) where the firm can essentially set different pricing levels to try to capture as much producer surplus as possible. Seeing as in the past there tends to be a large secondary market for new consoles during the first holiday season (since they come out right beforehand), do you see MSFT’s price point right now as a means of capturing some of this profit for themselves, with plans to equalize pricing with Sony in the long run? If not, how do you think their pricing strategy matches their announced market share strategy?
2) I’m hearing a lot of rage from the community right now, but in the long run, is MSFT’s used game strategy all that different from Sony’s, or are they just more explicit about publisher control over used game sales? I know EA is removing their Online Pass, but what prevents them or any other company from (re)instating that policy and how would that be different from what MSFT is doing?
3) I would love for you guys to discuss IP issues: Does having a physical disc really mean you “own” the game? Samsung and Apple seem to be spending a lot of time in court over non-physical issues. Does ownership mean some form of unrestricted usage rights? Does that mean I’ve never “owned” a DVD, since I’m not legally allowed to show that to more than a couple dozen people at a time? Is ownership then exclusive restricted usage rights? This seems pretty close to licensing agreements. Is the duration of the usage right the issue at hand? Maybe you two can explain to me how I’m an idiot and missing something obvious 🙂
4) Is Sony learning from MSFT about the PS+ for online gaming? It’s cheaper, but not by much. Does this leave a good opening for Steam/Valve to deliver similar services without the monthly/yearly fees?
Microsoft used games plan is something that not only affects used games but video game rental services as well. Do you think that Sony only delayed their plan to kill used games to win this console war or perhaps they never had one to begin with?
Man and i thought the Red wedding was a massacre.
Few questions which may have already been answered.
1. Does the Kinect have to be connected for the xbox one to work? I know that its included but im just wondering if like with the 360 you can just not connect it.
2. When can we expect an exact release dates for both systems ?
3. Will the 360 and One share the same severs ie for battlefield 4?
4. I know Xbox one severs will host up to 64 people , has anything been said about PS4?
5. Also i’m assuming that this check in one every 24 hours doesnt require an live subscription ?
@Luke
That’s a really great point you made in question #1
Is the Kinect really to blame for the Xbone being $100 more expensive? The PS4 also comes with a camera.
And, what demonstrations, exclusives do you feel were missing for a console launch?
Great questions guys! If you have any additional comments or questions during the live podcast, tweet us @PaulTassi and/or @cdrbedlam so that we can see it in real time.
See you guys later!
Good first online discussion guys! The slight technical glitch with Paul’s volume really wasn’t that bad.
Good discussion and thanks for addressing our questions. My apologies for the really academic questions, Benny, you handled them well. It’s always good to hear both of your thoughts/opinions on things.
Thanks guys! We fixed the voice volume problems, so hopefully you’ll check us out again next time 🙂
Paul and I talked about making this a regular thing. So, if you can, follow the channel here… http://mixlr.com/digitalbedlam/
Great questions and kudos to all those who participated in the live chat 😀
Will there be a version of the Xbox one that will more focused on gaming then TV?
