20 Undeniably Awesome Beards in Movies
Last month, Natty brought you 20 undeniably awesome mustaches in movies. I’m a big fan of mustaches and in the past have sported one myself. That said, a good beard blows away a good mustache any day of the week. There’s two types of beards in Hollywood: the hair that covers a man’s face and a Katie Holmes/Kelly Preston. To be clear, this gallery is dedicated to the former.
I’ve had a beard in the past, and the benefits are glorious. Sure, it itches, but women love it. My bosses no longer told me to do things; instead they politely asked. Everyone respects a good beard. And we’re talking about thick, awesome beards that you have to trim with scissors before shaving off. Goatees and those stupid line beards don’t count. That’s high school stuff.
Enjoy the gallery of 20 undeniably awesome beards in movies.

Kevin Smith’s beard is embued with unearthly magic, much like Steven Spielberg’s or Chuck Norris’s (where’s Chuck on this list, eh?).
Oh, and I do believe it’s “Revenge of the Sith”, not “Return”.
I deny that most of those are awesome. Beards are pretty ugly most of the time.
Zach Galifianakis rocks a mean fucking beard.
@ Korinthian
You are wrong. It must be beard envy.
@ Gill
How could I forget Chuck???? Please forgive me.
viggo had a good one in return of the king as well
@ espensor:
Indeed he did. And it was a good one. His beard in The Road, however, is just killer.
I’m forced to agree, this new movie with Viggo looks like it could be the greatest thing ever. . . because of that beard.
@LordChristo
I actually have very low expectations for The Road, but man, Viggo’s beard will make it worth watching. That does it, I’m growing a beard again. Starting….now.
What about Martin from Knocked Up??
“I think it’s Matisyahu”
@ Laura
Awesome, awesome call on Marty. I should have included him for sure. I did remember, though, to put him in my memorable movie stoners article.
You forgot arguably the most awesome beard ever seen on the silver screen. Robert Redford in Jeremiah Johnson.

The fact that his hair is blonde, and his beard is very dark, makes it all the more intense.
@ Jeremy
That’s a great link you attached. You’re right, there’s something very intense about that very impressive beard. Nice find.
and what about:
THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!
@diocan
Ha! Man, I hated that movie, but you’re right – a very thick, masculine beard, fit for a king.
Kenneth Branagh is the beard king.
Long live the beard king!
What about Jonathan Frakes and his Riker beard from the Star Trek movies?
Hart Bochner was awesome in Die Hard…and I’ve never seen him again. Anyone know what happened to him?
@ Abe Frohman
Bochner definitely went on to appear in a number of films after Die Hard, though none of his roles were nearly as memorable as that of Ellis. I don’t like thinking that an actor played Ellis; I prefer to believe he was a real life, incredible bearded douchebag.
Davy Jones Pirates?
Borat?
@ Anthony
Uh, you sure that Borat has a beard?
Oooh Hagrid from HP
Well, that one’s fake.
Jeff Daniel’s deserved his Oscar nomination for The Squid and the Whale based on his beard alone.
No Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting or The Fisher King? See http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1517525248/nm0000245
I would have to say that his beard growing is stronger than his acting these days…
Maybe it’s just my age, but one of the best was Steve Reeves’ beard in ‘Hercules’ and ‘Hercules Unchained’. I’ve trimmed my beard to approximate Sean Connery’s in ‘The Rock’, ‘Hunt for Red October’ and ‘Rising Sun’. It’s getting gray in the right places.
Whistler in Blade!
Also, Jack Black in School Of Rock. Man I love that movie
WHAT?!? No beards from the awesome LOTR series??? I see we have gandalf but what of all those other incredible viking beards!!
What about Davy Jones?? 🙂
Kurt russell in the thing. Hands down best movie beard.
What about the beards sported in both Boondock Saints movies. Billy Connolly & David Della Rocco in the first and Norman Redus & Sean Patrick Flannery with the previous two as well. Awesome beards.
