Scary on So Many Levels

Published by under Images,Movies,Television

The Ring is one of the most terrifying movies I’ve ever seen (at least when I was fourteen and in the front row), and Teletubbies have been thoroughly weirding me out since my babysitting days, so to see the two combined? Good lord, this is unnerving.

Now get some Poltergeist action going on inside Tinky Winky’s stomach TV, and then we’ll really be talking nightmares.

Floppy Drives Play The Imperial March

Published by under Movies,Videos

Yes, it’s true, floppy disks are so obsolete now that our children won’t even understand what that weirdly shaped “Save” icon on their computers even means, but that doesn’t mean they’re TOTALLY useless.

As is shown in this video, they can still be put to use in an incredibly unlikely fashion, as musical instruments. Wait what? Through some technical process that I don’t understand, this guy was able to make two different drives belt out the requisite sounds to create a rather good version of the Imperial March from Star Wars. Check it out above.

No Regrets

Published by under Images,Television

Do you love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Do you love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles enough to get a permanent tattoo to show that? Do you love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles enough to get a permanent tattoo that isn’t even of the actual turtles themselves? Well, then you’re in a very lonely camp of one, this guy, who is now internet famous for his Krang tattoo that I sincerely hope isn’t permanent, but I think it is.

I’ve seen some crazy geek tattoos in my time, but it’s going to be hard to top this one. I get that it’s funny like, the first one or two times, but after that? YOU HAVE KRANG ON YOUR STOMACH FOREVER!

Paul Plays Playstation: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Published by under Reviews,Video Games

Welcome to the inaugural installment of a new segment I’m calling “Paul Plays Playstation.” It’s exactly what it sounds like, and I thought I could make it its own feature because most of the games I’ll be discussing here actually came out some time ago. I’ve only recently picked up a Playstation 3 after all these years, and now I’m able to finally play them and share my thoughts, albeit a few years behind schedule.

I have a whole host of PS3 exclusives lined up to review, and I’ll work my way through them over the coming weeks and months. But when I picked up the console, I knew immediately what title I wanted to play through first, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Site veterans may recall that I actually had the chance to play through the original Uncharted some time ago on a friend’s PS3, and I found the experience incredibly enjoyable as the game was a fresh take on both the adventure platformer and the cover shooter. Add in a lead with an actual personality, and you had a great recipe for a franchise from the team that once upon a time brought us Crash Bandicoot.

Uncharted 2 however, was said to outshine the first game, and was in most circles 2009′s game of the year. With that sort of praise, and my enjoyment of the first title, I knew that this was a must play, and so it was my first purchase the day I got my PS3.

I’ve beaten the game over the past few days, and can now share my findings on the widely beloved title. It’s hard for something to live up to so much hype, but more often than not, Uncharted 2 does just that.

Wow, There are a Lot of Shows to Watch and Games to Play This Fall

Published by under Television,Video Games

I know Nat has been doing a list of “must see” shows of this Fall, but it really just hit me how much I have to keep up with in the coming months. TV-wise and video game-wise, this fall is I think the most stacked I’ve ever seen line-ups from either medium. And that’s not even considering all the movies I have to go see. Seriously, stopping and really writing this out, it’s almost overwhelming. But it’s an exciting time to be working in media, because there’s just so much damn good content out there. Here’s what’s on deck for me over the next few months:

TV – Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, Modern Family, The Office, Parks and Recreation, Community, New Girl, Terra Nova, Always Sunny, Archer (each week)

Games - Gears of War 3, Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Uncharted 3, Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Saints Row 3 and now Star Wars: The Old Republic. Not to mention maybe snagging a Diablo 3 beta key, and I wouldn’t rule out that could be out before the end of the year. Oh, I’m also trying to catch up on about 8 other PS3 titles I’ve missed over the years.

So yeah, that’s a LOT to get through, but it’s definitely an exciting prospect. I just hope I don’t burn out, as even though I love media, there can be too much of a good thing. With games in particular, I feel like exhaustion might set in as each is a big time commitment. Skyrim alone is 100+ hours, with the others being at least 10 or more apiece.

Why can’t they spread this stuff out more?

A Gallery of Mirrored Games

Published by under Images,Video Games

It’s a pretty rudimentary exercise in photo manipulation, folding over one side of something to create a mirror on the other. I didn’t think much would come of a project that took a bunch of recognizable game boxes and applied that principle to them, but as it turns out, there are some pretty worthwhile creations in here.

Whoever did this, did it to a LOT of games, and the results are sometimes funny (see MOOOOM above) and sometimes disturbing (I’m going to have nightmares about the Brink one).

I pulled the best ones I could find from the collection, and you can see them all below. I think it would be cool to do this with movie posters as well, so if you’re out there mysterious photoshopper, get on that project next, will you?

Memorable Moments in TV: Sammy Kisses Archie

Published by under Columns,Television

The kiss is at minute 1:35.   For those of you who might remember All in the Family (and I doubt you do because most of you reading this are very young), you might remember this controversial episode.

Considering how racist Archie Bunker was and how often themes of racism prevailed throughout the show, this was a groundbreaking and hilarious moment for television.

Granted Sammy Davis Jr. was already famous but the thought of a kiss on the cheek to an ignorant, blue collared, racist type was unprecedented.

A Gallery of 15 Road Signs as Movies

Published by under Images

At this point you guys know how much we love photoshopping and clever art.   I think this has a bit of both.  Over the last few months there’s been a pretty big trend in the “minimalist” space.   Personally I’m a huge fan of it.  It’s nice when you can take a concept and trim it down to the bare essentials.

Some forum members at Something Awful were able to use both creativity and mindfulness by taking movie posters and changing them into road signs.  Pretty cool if you ask me.

Check out the results after the jump…..
