Who Are the Five New Characters in Mortal Kombat 11?
Mortal Kombat 11 has proven to be a commercial success. As a result, it makes sense that it is receiving more DLC with more new characters. Currently, Mortal Kombat 11 is on the first of its two Kombat Packs, both of which are suppose to have a mix of Mortal Kombat characters and crossover characters. So far, the first Kombat Pack (https://gamerant.com/mortal-kombat-11-sindel-trailer-release-date/) has included Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, and the Terminator T-800 while Sindel, Joker, and Spawn are on their way.
Who Are Sindel, Joker, and Spawn?
Sindel is a Mortal Kombat character who has existed for some time. For those who are curious, she was the Queen of Edenia, thus making her Kitana’s mother. Unfortunately for Sindel, her home realm was invaded by Shao Kahn, who proceeded to kill her husband, enslave her people, and then force her to get married to him to strengthen his claim to the realm. Eventually, this proved to be too much for Sindel because she proceeded to commit suicide. Something that didn’t stop Shao Kahn from imprisoning her soul so that he could resurrect her in a brainwashed state that would be 100 percent loyal to him. Luckily for Sindel, her daughter Kitana was successful in breaking through her brainwashing, thus enabling her to become the new ruler of Edenia in opposition to Shao Kahn. As such, when the original Mortal Kombat timeline came to a conclusion, she was a member of the Forces of Light fighring in the Battle of Armageddon.
In the current Mortal Kombat timeline, Sindel’s lot has been much less positive. Here, she was resurrected by the sorcerer Quan Chi before being powered up by the sorcerer Shang Tsung’s souls. As a result, Sindel proceeded to kill a number of fighters, which included inflicting a lethal wound on her daughter Kitana. Later on, she is known to have supported the Elder God Shinnook’s plans. While Sindel met with defeat on more than one occasion, she was never said to have been killed, which is why a lot of people presume that she is now in the service of the revenant versions of Kitana and Liu Kang.
Curiously, Sindel’s story seems to have been retconned for Mortal Kombat 11. Now, it seems that she was so determined to hold on to her power and privilege as the Queen of Edenia that when Shao Kahn launched his invasion, she turned on her husband as well as her people so that she could retain her position. Suffice to say that this is a huge change of character for Sindel who now seems as though she was always evil rather than someone who was once good but has since been made into a tool for those with evil intentions. The whole thing is particularly strange because Mortal Kombat 11 is supposed to be the end of the current part of Mortal Kombat’s story, meaning that the timing of the retcon seems a bit premature when big chances are incoming. Still, it is possible that this is supposed to elaborate on what happned in the background of Mortal Kombat, meaning that this Sindel won’t be as unrecognizable as she sounds.
Moving on, both the Joker and Spawn are crossover characters from superhero comic books. First, the Joker should be very recognizable, seeing as how he is the single most famous Batman supervillain to have ever been created. It is interesting to note that the version of the character that was revealed to Mortal Kombat 11 players has met with some backlash from some fans. Apparently, while this Joker’s costume is very recognizable as a Joker costume, neither his face nor his body match up with what said individuals expect from the character. In their opinion, he is too young and too well-built, which make for a jarring comparison with previous depictions in fighting games as well as other media. Second, Spawn is a creation of Todd McFarlane who became very popular in the 1990s when he received his own comic book series released via Image Comics. In short, he was a murdered assassin who agreed to become a hellspawn in exchange for the right to return to Earth to see his wife one last time. However, demons being demons, the resulting Spawn was returned to Earth without most of his memories, thus complicating matters. In time, Spawn decided to become a dark superhero as his new purpose in life, not least because it turned out that enough time has passed for his wife to have moved on.
Who Will the Other New Characters Be?
Currently, nothing has been said about the characters who will be showing up in Kombat Pack 2. However, there have been enough leaks for interested individuals to come up with some good guesses. These guesses are by no means confirmed fact, but they seem likelier to be true than not.
First, there is Fujin. For those who are unfamiliar, both Fujin and Raiden were based on Japanese gods called Fujin and Raijin, demonic-looking gods of wind and thunder who tended to be either mischevious or outright malicious, as shown by the stories told about them eating human children. However, like how Raiden is a much more heroic figure than Raijin, Fujin is a much more heroic figure than his mythological counterpart as well. Story-wise, Fujin seems to be defeated by Frost so that he couldn’t assist Raiden and his other allies, so it will be interesting to see how his presence will be explained.
Second, there is Sheeva, a member of the four-armed Shokan species who was created in response to fan interest in a playable version of Goro. Despite this, her appearances in the Mortal Kombat franchise have not been particularly numerous. Something that presumably made it that much more striking that she showed up as a side-character of some note in Mortal Kombat 11’s story. Based on this plus other hints, it seems certain that Sheeva will be one of the Mortal Kombat characters coming in Kombat Pack 2.
Finally, there is reason to believe that Ash Williams will be one of the crossover characters included in the second set of DLC. However, those who are disappointed by these choices shouldn’t give up hope because nothing has been said about the exact number of characters included in Kombat Pack 2, meaning that their favorites still have a chance to make it in. For that matter, it is not as though the people behind Mortal Kombat 11 can’t change their minds about which characters to include and which characters to not include in the DLC that is still further out.
