Weekly Movie Rec: Repo! The Genetic Opera
This week I’m doing the unthinkable, I’m recommending a movie that Paris Hilton is in.
Yes, that’s her above, but don’t let that scare you away. Repo! is a hell of a movie, and I guarantee you’ve never seen anything quite like it. It’s a sci-fi musical that’s sort of a cross between The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog. The story follows a corporation that sells organs, but when you can’t pay your bills, it’s time to repossess. Yes, this is also similar to 2010’s Repo Men, but that had far less singing.
It’s going to take a certain taste to appreciate this film, but I think there are many in the Unreality audience who might like it. It just came out in 2008, so I’m betting there are a few of you who have heard of it, but didn’t quite know what the hell it was to check it out.
Well consider this motivation. If you’re a fan of the strange and musical, you might appreciate Repo! Even if Paris Hilton does sing.
Yes!! I freakin’ love this movie…
Yes, Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) is a kick-ass movie. Odd how Repo Men (2010), which was based on The Repossession Mambo (2009) is so similar to it, isn’t it? Check the dates, do a little thinking…
Although, to be honest, Repo Men was supposedly being worked on before Repo! was released, I still find the similarities very disturbing. Particularly since Repo! was originally a play, and performed years before the movie was filmed.
Even though this movie isn’t the absolute best, I love it. Anytime I can hear Anthony Head sing, I’m on board.
Watched it when it came. Liked it a lot. Love that bizarre setting.
Also that professor from Buffy has really awesome voice for singing.
Really good film. If you like it be sure to get the soundtrack. Keep in mind that it is technically an opera (even though there are a few spoken parts) so lines are sang. Remember Zydrate comes in a little glass vial
I wanted to like this movie. The art direction and concept were great, but the songs were almost all lackluster. If more work had been put into the songs, the film would have been a lot better in my opinion. Being hyped up by the trailers which used the one really good song in the entire movie I was quite disappointed.
@Baker, you obviously dont’ have a taste for rock-techno-opera-whatever it was that was still awesome.
but yeah, awesome movie, and Paris Hilton’s character was actually kinda interesting. i didn’t realize it was her until half way through the movie
Zydrate comes in a little glass vial.
My wife watches this once a month.
Repo! was a brilliant movie. The Graverobber was actually the guy that wrote the entire script (lyrics?) for the movie, and i’m pretty sure he did the musical scores as well. As a note: Repomen is a blatant ripoff of Repo!, it was an attempt to cater to a more action-oriented audience as opposed to the musical.
i absolutely adore this movie! its so unique and strange…oh, and repo! was written all the way back in 1997 as a play while repo men came out in 2010 and the book it was based off of was written in 2009
suuuuuuuccccccchhhhhhhhhhh a good movie.
Been meaning to check this one out for awhile now. On another note, I like that once scene in ‘House Of Wax’ where Paris Hilton gets killed in the face with a big pole (ho ho ho). The rest of the film, not so much.
I suggest this movie because Paris Hilton’s face falls off. I always laugh.
I remember when I first watched the film, I could not get enough of it some of the best music I have heard in a long time, plus I also have to say I am not a very great Paris Hilton fan to be honest cant stand the bitch but cant knock her for her performance she played her role well. I also would recommend this film to any one that asks me if I know of any good musicals, because it would be the first one to pop into my head. I will leave you guys this to make your own decisions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otdH3SLNx-s trust me you wont be disappointed.
@Beckie
You are someone after my own heart. I say the same thing to people.
Such a good movie! Plus you get to hear Anthony Stewart Head and Sarah Brightman singing. It can’t get much better than that. 🙂
