Wait, Thor from Borderlands Actually Exists?
Alright, so my mind is kind of blown at the moment. Seeing the giant behemoth piece of construction machinery that is Thor in Borderlands is an awesome virtual site to behold, but according to this picture, this massive piece of machinery actually exists?
I don’t think it’s photoshop, as it does have slight differences from the game version, but I just had no idea that Thor was inspired by a real piece of equipment.
Not sure if we have any construction enthusiasts in the house here, but me Googling “giant construction blade machine crawler” isn’t getting me anywhere, so if anyone can tell me what this is, and why it’s used in real life, I’m really quite curious.

It’s called an earth mover and it’s the biggest in existence.
It’s called a bucket-wheel excavator. Apparently, the biggest one around, the Bagger 293, is on record as the largest terrestrial vehicle yet built. I think they’re used mostly for stripping soil off of coal deposits, but don’t quote me.
He is right it is a bucket wheel excavator, made by a German company called ThyssenKrupp Fordertechnik here is a link of article and pic of one actually “eating” a bulldozer someone parked in the wrong place at the wrong time http://www.newscientist.com/blog/technology/2007/01/machine-munches-bulldozer.html, pretty funny and pretty effen huge
all i know is that it was made in germany
I guess it’s built to last until we successfully figure out intergalactic space travel.
It’s a “Schaufelradbagger” and is used in Germany to dig up coal in pretty huge open-pit mining, as you can imagine. Every couple of years one of these monsters has to move from one hole to another. They move it via the Autobahn, but to not destray everything they lay a thick layer of sand on it.
Whole towns have been moved and relocated just so that they can dig on a new location (For example Garzweiler I and Garzweiler II).
From the pic above, it looks like it’s on the move… I would hate to any of those drivers waiting for the beast to pass so I can move along.
We made that!!! BRAVO HUMANITY!
They’re used by evil geniuses to cut the planet in half.
Never seen that before?
Dude, you should totally come to germany and see what we can construct^^
I’ve seen that before, and played Borderlands after I saw it, but I didn’t think of it. Nice eye. I guess I don’t have a video-game mind.
I live in Germany and its a Bagger which shovels coal in North Rhine-Westphalia. I actually visited it when it was moved to another place. its reallyyyyy huge.
Its not a photoshop.
You should see it when its transformed!

Actually the bagger is also in the movie Avatar several times. Hope you noticed it there too (^^,)
It actually has a brother. The excavator is used to scrape the surface of the mines wall until it reaches brown coal. It then moves along to a new area as its brother (another excavator/giant conveyor belt) moves in to remove the actual brown coal. All of which gets transported several miles away to a power plant. It pays to watch History/Discovery =D
You also can find it in Stalker Call of Pripyat. Check out my screenshot:

We used to use these in Northern Alberta too. I drove past this monster every day on the way the work when I lived in Fort McMurray. It’s on display on the side of the highway.

They’ve been replaced with electric shovels.
