Bulbasaur was used at the very beginning of Pokemon since he was good against the first 2 gym leaders. Squirtle was used more than Charmander but was used less than Bulbasaur since the 2nd gym leader was a water type. Charmander wasn’t used almost at all in the beginning by a lot of people, but if you had patience, he turned out to be the best started once evolving into Charizard. Venasaur however was pretty much the lamest third evolution of the starters.
I always started with Charmander. Usually got him to evolve by the first gym too.
