Ten Of My Favorite Movie Couples

I’m married so getting a daily dose of Hollywood backwash is something I have to put up with on a daily basis.   If it’s not US Weekly then it’s me overhearing my wife yapping to her friends about the latest breakups or hook ups or any of that crap.

So in honor of my wife I figured I’d take a look at my own past in watching movies to see which couples I enjoyed watching.   There are ten that particularly stuck out to me.  Of course there are more but I hope you enjoy these picks.

Here are ten of my favorite movie couples….

Bonnie and Clyde in Bonnie and Clyde

One of the best if not best criminal couples in the history of cinema.  This movie clearly set the stage for….

Mickey and Mallory Knox in Natural Born Killers

Talk about your modern day and gruesome Bonnie and Clyde couple.   Oliver Stone is one twisted dude but this movie rocked.

Lee Holloway and E. Edward Grey in Secretary

If you haven’t seen this movie then please for the love of God do.   It’s absolutely insane.   What’s with James Spader?  Does he have some insane sexual addiction problem in real life?

Bob and Charlotte in Lost in Translation

How do I say this without being cheesy?  I’ve never “felt” a couple more than in this movie.   Great chemistry from Murry and Johansson.   Love the age difference too.

Claudia and Jim in Magnolia

This is actually one of my favorite movies and man this was a weird film.  The dynamic between this two is amazing.  She’s a formerly sexually abused coke head and he’s a religious cop.  Awesome.

Allie and Noah in The Notebook

Say what you want about the whole romance movie thing but if you’ve ever seen this movie then you’ll know that Gosling and Mccadams did a hell of a job in this flick.

Clarence and Alabama in True Romance

Hey remember when Christian Slater did cool roles?  This was one of them.

Norman and Ethel in On Golden Pond

My favorite old couple of all time.

Edward and Vivien in Pretty Woman

A rich guy and a hooker ending up together.  Yup.  That’s realistic.  Still though, that’s one hell of a couple when she’s not turning tricks.

Benjamin and Elaine in The Graduate

Elaine!  Elaine!

*And no I’m not even close to mentioning Twilight.  Would love to hear your picks in the comments…..I would have mentioned Harry and Sally but they weren’t technically a couple until the end of the movie.

  1. anna(julia roberts) and william(hugh grant) from “Notting hill”. oh and of course hugh grant and andie mcdowell in “four weddings and a funeral” (my all time best romantic comedy)

  2. I’m actually repeating a previous comment in this article:

    https://unrealitymag.com/index.php/2011/02/14/debate-of-the-day-whats-your-favorite-movie-romance/

    But what the hell.

First of all, an honourable Mention. George and Winona Kirk (Star Trek)

Additionally, Max, I actually found the relationship between Simon Callow and John Hannah to be the best relationship within Four Weddings and a Funeral. The joy they share in life and then *SPOILERS* when Simon Callow’s character, Gareth, dies and his lover Matthew makes that impassioned speech at the funeral I thought that was one of the most sweetly tragic pieces of acting I have ever seen. I think their relationship is probably the best homosexual relationship I have ever seen on film (yes, much better than the relationship between Tom Hanks and Antonio Banderas in Philadelphia, which to be honest, I never really could commit myself into believing their feelings for each other). Also, still talking about “Four Weddings” I find Hugh Grant’s character, as his characters usually are, to be a pretentious foppish twat, and Andie McDowell’s to be a self-indulgent bitch, who deserves a fucking slap.

    But anyway, my top 5:

    5. Belle and Beast (Beauty and the Beast)
    4. Sam and Kathryn ‘Kissing Kate’ Barlow (Holes)
    3. Carl and Ellie Fredrickson (Up)
    2. Wall-e and Eve (Wall-e)
    1. Jenny and Forrest (Forrest Gump)

Each of which are so beautiful in their love for each other and each one never fails to make me shed tears. Especially the latter.

  3. Bruce Willis and Kim Basinger in “Blind Date”. One of the few romantic comedies I’ll watch, and even funnier now when I watch it as an adult than when I was a kid, because now I can relate to some of the crazy situations they get into.

Also, I’d go with John Travolta and Kirstie Alley in The “look who’s talking” movies. Another pair of actors with great romantic chemistry.

  4. Before I even checked what couples you had picked I was already thinking Secretary, a friend of mine is OBSESSED with James Spader and made me watch that movie a while ago and I loved it.
A few couples I can think of are Jack and Rose from Titanic oh and Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillipe from Cruel Intentions (before he fell for Reese Witherspoon)

  5. Jack Foley (George Clooney) and Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez) in Out Of Sight.

As much as I would like to generally bitch slap Jennifer Lopez just because of how she is the way she is, this is my favorite screen couple.

  6. DEFINITELY have to agree with the Kirstie Alley and John Travolta – this is automatically what I thought of. Also agree with Secretary (one of my favourite movies of all time). Also have to submit Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid (I know it’s not technically a couple) in Casablanca. By far the best romantic connections in film.

Also Simon Callow and John Hannah is THE BEST part of Four Weddings and a Funeral. Great movie with some of the worst leads.

  7. What about Veronica Slater (Winona Ryder) & JD (Christian Slater) in Heathers? Yes, she broke it off with him after realizing he’s a psychopath, but I thought the scenes at the beginning & middle were touching, funny & sexy.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs has Clint Lockwood (Bill Hader) & Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) in a truly fun geek romance.

In Hackers, Crash Override (Jonny Lee Miller) & Acid Burn (Angelina Jolie) are a turbulent, incendiary couple, no doubt helped by their off-screen romance that led to marriage.

Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) & Diane Court (Ione Skye) make a cute, unlikely couple in Cameron Crowe’s Say Anything.
