Street Fighter 6 – Blanka Character Breakdown
Street Fighter 6 comes with a whole new look and feel in this latest sequel. Not only with the overall aesthetic but, with how the characters play, as well. One returning face jumping back into the roster in this sixth installment is non-other than Blanka. He was always an anomaly in the Street Fighter franchise. Being a hairy, green mutant with electrical powers is a strange sight indeed. However, he has always been a formidable fighter and a fan favorite for decades. This time around, he comes with his famous bag of tricks along with some new surprises.
This Brazilian beast is a tank with monkey-like agility. He is best known to be a brawler, but intimately so. His electrical powers never really had much reach. However, they can be inserted into all manners of combos and come with hefty damage output. He plays a lot like E. Honda with his charge moves. The difference here is that Blanka is much more light on his feet and his attacks aren’t quite as damaging. With that said, Blanka is a unique character that comes with all sorts of feral combos that make him second to none.
By and large, Blanka has remained mostly unchanged from his past endeavors. His move set remains intact, in what made him famous since the days of Street Fighter II. Of course, the new Drive System in this sixth installment provides new ways to execute combos and make Blanka an even deadlier opponent. He is all about mixing things up and keeping the opponent guessing about what is going to happen next.
Blanka’s Power Moves
Any seasoned Street Fighter player will feel right at home with Blanka. His ‘feel’ from the previous games is solidified here. Naturally, there are some new tricks to pull off to help keep things fresh. All in all, there isn’t a whole lot new to add to his repertoire. Blanka mains will be comfortable jumping right in with him and winning matches without much sweat. With that said, it is important to note that there are some extra layers to dig into with his fighting style for some extra carnage.
Rolling Attack
Pull back for a few seconds, then press forward and punch. This is Blanka’s standard power move from Street Fighter II. He will cannonball across the screen, slamming into his opponent. It’s quite fast and it can work beautifully in a number of combos.
Vertical Rolling Attack
Hold down for a second or two, then press up and punch. Blanka will launch a cannonball straight up into the air, making it a powerful standalone attack. Not to mention a rather handy anti-air move.
Aerial Rolling Attack
While in the air, pull back for a second or two then press forward and punch. This is another cannonball attack that slings Blanka downward from the air. It is a nice little surprise attack while jumping around. Especially when retreating or dodging a projectile.
Electric Thunder
Roll a fourth of a circle backward, then press punch. This is his classic electric shock move that radiates around his body. Now, that players no longer need to spam the punch button like the games of yesteryear, it is much easier to put this move into combos.
Blanka-chan Bomb
Press, down, down, then punch. This move is more or less the only projectile that is available in Blanka’s trick bag. He will drop a figure resembling himself and it will begin bouncing around the area. You can charge it with electricity using the Electric Thunder move. So, dropping this doll before combos is ideal for extra damage.
Wild Hunt
Roll a fourth of a circle forward, then press punch. Blanka will execute a feral-like tackle, locking his opponent onto the ground. He will then, slash their face with his claws, dealing moderate damage.
Backstep Rolling Attack
Roll a half circle backward, then press kick. Blanka will perform a rolling attack in the form of an arc. This comes in handy for dodging projectiles and closing the distance. It also helps with keeping opponents on their toes.
Blanka’s Super Arts Moves
It should come as no surprise that Blanka’s Super Art moves are mostly centered around electricity. Thus, his cannonball move is also part of this list. Some of these moves have a short range, so executing accordingly is vital. Not to mention, that one is focused on charging up Blanka, making him a giant furry ball of thunder. These moves are nice for standalone attacks, but putting them into combos is the best way to go.
Lightning Beast
Roll a fourth of a circle backward, twice. Then press punch. Blanka will be laced with blue electricity, giving him the ability to juice up his power moves. His cannonball moves will be enhanced, giving extra elemental damage to the opponents.
Shout of Earth
Roll a fourth of a circle forward, twice. Then press punch. Blanka will unleash a ground slam, followed by a shockwave with electricity. Players will need to get in close. Hence, using this move during combos is recommended.
Ground Shave Cannonball
Roll a fourth of a circle, twice. Then press kick. This is a cinematic move, when Blanka will tackle his opponent, bites them, then sling them into the air for a finishing cannonball attack. Useful for canceling out projectiles.
Conclusion
Blanka in Street Fighter 6 shows the green Brazilian monster in top form. He is a unique fighter and he always had lasting appeal. His new moves aren’t too alien in terms of his base move set. They are generally an extension, giving him a little more edge than what he had in the past. Street Fighter 6 is now available for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
