So How About Those 2012 Oscar Nominations?
Well I just got word that the Oscar nominations have been announced, and boy are they….something! I’m actually just reading through them now as I’m writing this, and so far, there don’t seem to be a terribly large amount of surprises. Though I am surprised I’ve never heard of two of the best picture nominees.
My mind is racing to think of what exactly got snubbed this year, but I do understand that “shit that I liked” does not necessarily equate to “shit that deserves to be Academy Award nominated.” As in, no Dark Knight Rises or Avengers to be found almost anywhere. All I have to say is that Wreck-It Ralph had better win best animated feature.
I know I’m late on my “best films of 2012” list I do every year, but I didn’t want to make the same mistake last year where I didn’t see my true #1 (The Artist) until after I wrote the list. Therefore, once I see Zero Dark Thirty this weekend, I’ll be ready. And now I suppose I have to see “Amour” and “Beasts of the Southern Wild” too, but that may take a while as I don’t remember those being released anywhere within a 100 mile radius of me.
Check out all the nominees below, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Probably the most surprising category is Best Director, since I think most people expected Affleck and Bigelow to be in the mix.
where the hell is kathryn bigelow for best director?!?!?!?!?! “OSAMA…..OSAMA…….OSAMA”… ;(
Oh man, you should wait to do your list until you see Amour and Beasts of the Southern Wild. Especially Beasts of the Southern Wild.
silver linings playbook shouldn’t be getting nominated this much
Best Director had it’s snubs (no Ben Affleck??? – look, I didn’t love Argo like everyone else, but even I know he should have been nominated for best director), and I’m mixed on some of these Best Picture nominations . . .
Haven’t seen Beasts of the Southern Wild, but the reason for that is I have a couple friends who would have appreciated the film much more than me who saw it and were very dissapointed with it. So, skipped that one. AMour is on my to see list, as it’s what I’ve heard is the best film of the year.
If I was to be honest, I’d have to say The Master was my favorite film of the year. I’m not mad it didn’t get the best pic nom as every major actor in it got a nomination. Besides, I’m well aware that The Master was the least inviting film for people who weren’t ready to hunker down and take a good half of the film not literally. That’s something the movie going public – even the self-declared “movie buffs” – aren’t able to do. But it really isn’t expected of them. The film could have done a better job guiding the audience (it did guide the audience, but sometimes it was too subtle for it’s own good). Oh well, I couldn’t have really expected it.
I haven’t liked a Best Picture winner since The Hurt Locker, I think. Even then, that years was a little . . . well, unambitious. Much preferred 2007 with There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men. That was the last “great” year to me.
“Meh..”
Just like most years, a few good nominations everything else is a snore fest.
The fact that Skyfall didn’t get a best picture nod or at the very least best supporting actress for Judy Dench is a disgrace!
Life of Pi is beautiful and fantastic. I wish it could take as many as possible awards. But looking at this list, looks like ol’ Steve will take AAward for best director and picture. Shame
