Nerdgasm for New Year’s: Geeky Things to Be Excited About in 2015

Science and Technology

It’s not all just entertainment for us geeks; we also like it when there are major contributions to society, even if they are just new consumer gadgets.

The most talked about ones are Windows 10 (I guess Windows 7 ate 9 yuk yuk!) and the Apple iWatch. I am highly skeptical about the real progress either will achieve, but they create an excellent jumping off point for new levels of interactivity between gadgets and a Windows OS that actually works again.

The Oculus Rift will also debut this year, and hopefully live up to the hype that the Virtual Boy never could. Also 4K TVs are becoming more affordable and commonplace, meaning there are going to be a lot more well-employed friends’ houses worth inviting yourself over to in the near future.

As for science, a probe is scheduled to reach Pluto in July thanks to NASA’s New Horizons mission. Similarly, the European Space Agency will land their Rosetta spacecraft on a comet as it approaches nail-bitingly close to our Sun, sending back data all the way. A slew of commercial space travel vehicles will also be undergoing atmospheric exit and reentry trials throughout the year, further opening the door for “space tourism” in the near future.

Back here on Earth, the Large Hadron Collider will resume operation after a nearly three year hiatus. The device has been outfitted with double the power to create and measure even more unfathomable quantum particles as a part of its ongoing experiments. To steal a joke from Futurama: “Super collider, but I just met her!”

All of these developments in both entertainment and science are sure to make 2015 a year that we won’t soon forget. By the end of the year we will have a great deal to talk about, the very least of which will be just how much of an ass George Lucas will look after someone with talent shows him how to handle his own IP.

What events are you guys most excited about for this next year? Let us know in the comments!
