Movie Recommendation of the Week: Streets of Gold
As a child I loved virtually any movie that involved boxing. Clearly all of the Rocky movies were my favorite but if it had boxing, I pretty much liked the film. Amongst some of my favorites were movies like Diggstown, The Champ, Raging Bull, and Gladiator.
But there’s one movie that always gets overlooked. It’s a movie that no one ever mentions and I have no idea why because it was great. It’s called Streets of Gold. Here’s a quick synopsis
Alek is an immigrant from the Soviet Union who was a talented boxer in his day, but he was not allowed on the Soviet national team because he was a Jew and assaulted his coach. Depressed and discouraged, he meets two young amateur boxers. As their coach, he trains them for glory.
And guess who one of the young boxers is? Wesley Snipes in his second role after Wildcats. And the other? Adrian Pasdar who you might remember from Heroes. It’s a great tale of black and white. Two guys trying to get out of the ghetto life. Overcoming adversity. The whole nine. It’s not the greatest “quality” of movies but it’s enjoyable the whole way through.
