5 Gems From E3 You May Have Missed

Orgarythm – Acquire

Now if we could just get Captain Olimar to dance.

Orgarythm is a tough one to describe. Take one part Pikmin, one part Patapon, and two parts absurd, and we may just have Orgarythm. Set to be released for the PS Vita, Orgarythm appears to be a great blend of RTS and rhythm games mixed with some cool music. You move around and input commands via the touch screen. Commands may be placed at any time, but you may find more success if you stay on beat. Every command placed to the beat of the music increases the power and number of units you can command. Combine this with a fun rock-paper-scissors mechanic for unit types and upgrades for the main character, Orgarythm seems like a great little title for the train ride home.

Fire Emblem: Awakening – Nintendo

Hey, buddy, the war’s this way.

Here’s one that almost definitely slipped by most people’s radars. Announced via the unflattering means known as Twitter, Awakening is the English release of the latest Fire Emblem for the 3DS, the first FE game in five years. While all the standard turn-based fare is here, it brings an assortment of features from the games history. The ‘Casual Mode’ allows you to bring back lost units, which at times was very unforgiving in older games. With the promotion feature, you may upgrade units for further customization. If that’s not enough, there is also a completely customizable main character to better represent the character you want. Also, thanks to the 3DS, DLC joins the mix. With an offering of new maps and new units, this should tide over any strategy and FE fan for some time.

Agni’s Philosophy – SquareEnix

SquareEnix is lying. This has to be an actor, right?

While not technically a game, Agni’s Philosophy is still a big deal. Produced using SquareEnix’s new Luminous Engine, Agni is a “real-time” tech demo showcasing the capabilities of the new engine. Set in what appears to be a futuristic, magical, Middle-East, Agni’s Philosophy could pass as the next Final Fantasy entry. From the locales to the outfits to the people themselves, the work is awe-inspiring. Assuming this is not just some pre-rendered work, Luminous Engine could be quite the contender in the coming years. As we’ve seen the Unreal Engine in a lot of places this generation, next generation may be ruled by Luminous. While we have yet to see if it will live up to its promise, the prospect of another major engine is quite exciting.

  1. It’s a real time demo; they manipulated it real time at E3, rotating the camera and changing colors on characters. There was a walkthrough at the end of the demo.
