The Final Countdown: Golden Age Over, Psychotic Movie Teachers and Don’t Watch with Parents

Published by under Final Countdown

Are we at the end of the golden age of TV?

In the wake of “Lost,” network and cable executives seem to crave ever bigger (and emptier) televisual thrill pellets. Forget that the very best dramas of the current golden age — “The Sopranos,” “Six Feet Under,” “The Wire,” “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” — build suspense through careful character development, restrained dialogue and meticulous storytelling. “Lost” produced a dangerous addiction to spectacular, heart-stopping pilots with very little clue where to go from there.

Is it all over now? Are we heading in that direction?

Gaming in a Single Image

Published by under Images,Video Games

It may be a bit rainbow-y for my tastes, but there’s no denying that this is a pretty awesome image that encompasses a TON of the best games out there.

It’s by CartoonGirl7, and reportedly took sixty full hours of work to complete. When you blow it up and look at all that detail, I definitely believe it.

If this is the “best of gaming” however, I would get that damn blue shell out of there. Nobody likes you blue shell, go away.

Breaking Bad in Springfield

Published by under Television,Videos

God bless people with way too much time on their hands.

I’m not sure how long it would take to go through a million episodes of The Simpsons and find the clips it would take to bring Breaking Bad to Springfield, but I’m damn sure glad someone did it.

Flanders and Bart make quite the team it turns out.

Why Are There Still So Many on the Shelf?

Published by under Images,Video Games

With how much of a massive seller Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was, I was surprised to see this photo, which post-Christmas shows Best Buy’s shelves still lined with Gunnar Optics MW3 gaming eyewear.

Wouldn’t the dedicated Call of Duty players want to get their vision slightly tinted so they can spot far out enemies .0001% more of the time? Silly me, what am I saying, this is MW3, there ARE no far out enemies on these maps.

At the very least ,you would think they’d want to look super cool, sitting in their living rooms wearing eighty dollar quarter sunglasses which somehow have to fit around their headsets. Again, why did these not fly off the shelves?

Get your own pair here! You know it’s bad when even professional models look ridiculous in your product.

Accidentally Awesome: Why Skyrim’s Greatness is in Its Flaws

Published by under Editorials,Video Games

An Unreality guest post by Dave Bast.

Why I picked it: I got a few different personal essays about Skyrim, but this one stood out as an interesting account of why Skyrim’s craziness actually makes it a more lovable game, however immersion breaking it might be. I had similar experiences during my own playthrough(s) and I think Dave’s style makes for an enjoyable journal read.

***This post contains spoilers***

I entered the cave south of Whiterun just after midnight. The bandit guard at the entrance I tried to sneak past was keener than I had expected and caught me before I could proceed. A few quick and deadly maneuvers and the debate was over, his gold in my pocket before he hit the ground. The silly fool should have pretended he didn’t see me. Once inside, I quickly checked to make sure that my blade, an Orc-made, vampiric dagger, is properly poisoned and that I’m ready for combat.

Lights flickered within a large open chamber, the voices of two bandits echoed within. As they came into view I could hear they were discussing the security of their mine’s entrance, one even questioned the wisdom of having only one guard out front. Good thinking, I smiled. I crept down a small ramp and around to the shadows surrounding their camp. As I crept closer, I hoped that they would see me, I was itching for a real fight. They each stood at either side of a small campfire; the one closest to me was within range of a long shadow cast by a bookcase nearby. As I approached I grew excited, I knew as soon as I killed the first one his companion would attack in fear and frustration. I was looking forward to that fight… that and the look on his face when the man he is speaking to slumps dead into the campfire.

When Disney Goes Steampunk

Published by under Images,Movies

This isn’t the first time Disney has been combined with Steampunk, and it probably won’t be the last, but it is in fact, one of the better efforts to blend to the two styles from artist MecaniqueFairy.

And no, thankfully this collection is not princess centric as you  might imagine. Rather, it draws on characters from all over the Disney universe, even going so far as to feature the likes of Jack Skellington. Yes, that was Disney.

Some of these characters were made for Steampunk, like Pinnocchio and Hook, and others seem to be adapting nicely. Check out the gallery below:

Photo of the Week: The Hogwart’s Express Fail

Published by under Images

I swear to God this looks exactly like the house I lived in during college.  I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.   906 Lowerline Street in New Orleans, LA.   Fellas, if that’s you, then kudos for making one of the dumbest doorways in the history of mankind.

If not, whoever these people are, I have to admit it’s kind of funny.   I just hope that it was intended to be this bad.   I do like the little lip thing on the bottom though.

Not Your Everyday Frosty the Snowman

Published by under Images

I’m sure most of you are off somewhere celebrating your lovely holiday break.   I hope that some of you are planning your tropical New Year’s holiday in a warm climate.  But for the rest of us sad human beings who are staying toasty by the fire and watching movies, I thought you’d get a kick out of this gallery.

Frosty the Snowman is always portrayed in this jolly, cute demeanor right?  Well, the artists at Deviant Art don’t necessarily think that should be the case.

Here’s a pretty badass gallery of some alternate Frosty the Snowmen.
