Wonder Woman Will be Using The Excellent Nemesis System

Monolith is developing a new open-world Wonder Woman game. It’s quite a jump to go from slaying orcs in MIddle-Earth to battling villains in the DC Universe.  Even though everyone was expecting a next-gen Mordor adventure, Wonder Woman being announced felt like a punch in the gut from Darkseid himself. Even though Princess Diana may have her fair share of hard-core fans, having her take charge of a standalone adventure may not seem like enough to garner any other interest. Well, the developers over at Monolith crafted a unique and special A.I. called “The Nemesis System” which was the crown jewel for the Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War games. Given that Monolith now has two full-fledged titles under their belt that use this system, utilizing it for another game with next-gen hardware is certainly raising eyebrows.

There is not an awful lot of details explaining this new title, but it is a sure bet that it will have a deep, satisfying melee system. Not to mention that it is going to be an action-adventure title, since that is what Monolith excels at. With the lore and special abilities associated with Diana Prince, there is a lot that the developers can play with. Thus, there is a wealth of characters and storylines that can be adapted into this title. The trailer did hint that she might be headed back to her home island of Themyscira. Something evil is creeping up to their shores, as her mother Hippolyta subtly mentions in the trailer. Whether or not the entire game will take place there is unknown. However, it is clear that it does seem to have a key part to this story.

Amazonian Potential

Wonder Woman is fairly acquainted with the video game universe. One of her newer appearances will be with the new platform brawler Multiversus releasing sometime next year. Thusly, she has also made several other appearances in fighting games like Injustice and even adventure games like Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes. Of course, having her star in her very own video game for next-gen consoles is a refreshing change of pace. Generally, the use of fisticuffs, her bracelets, and the lasso was standard fare whenever she battled. Now, she brandishes a sword and shield rather regularly throughout her recent incarnations in animation and comic books. It solely depends on when during her superhero career someone is focusing on. Even though she uses these weapons from time to time, it’s not what she is truly known for. She has always been more of a brawler.

Now, having Monolith decide to have her use them would be a natural fit, since they have deep experience with this type of melee with their games. At the very least, it could be put in as an optional form of combat, with the ability to sheath and put away the blade. Getting around the map would be a rather slick venture. Wonder Woman has been known to fly, or at least hover, under her own free will. It wasn’t until later that she started using her famed Invisible Jet. Whether or not these can be used during in-engine gameplay or maybe as a fast travel mechanic of some sort is, “up in the air.” Clearly, it is a safe assumption that an interrogating system will be stitched into the overall Nemesis System just like it was with the Mordor games while using the Lasso of Truth. Not to mention it can potentially be used for grappling, parkour moves, and even long-ranged attacks.

Forging Alliances

Now, the bread and butter of Wonder Woman will definitely be the return of the Nemesis System. It is stated that this will be a third-person game, which will strictly be a single-player experience. It is noted that Diana will be tasked to “become a leader” which is a good indicator that this means that players will be building their own army through the use of the Nemesis System. This notion isn’t much of a stretch, since this was dabbled in with the Seige Missions in Shadow of War. Evidently, something like this could be in the works albeit on a more massive scale. Perhaps the Amazonians, humans, and maybe other superheroes will need to join forces to fight this new threat. It is mentioned that relationships will be built with both enemies and allies alike through the use of the Nemesis System.

Naturally, knowing the Nemesis System, this won’t be as easy as it sounds. Any player that has played the Mordor games knows that forming alliances can get “messy.” There will be backstabbing, assassination attempts, treachery, and even deep-rooted loyalty in some cases. The lives of all the NPCs that players will encounter will constantly go on and evolve. Everyone will have their own routine, wants, and goals. Starting with being a nobody to becoming a leader, this feature is what makes the Mordor games infinitely replayable. The thing is that Warner Bros. has copywritten and patented the Nemesis System and no other developer is allowed to use it without their permission. That’s too bad because this basic idea can go a long way with all kinds of IPs. With Wonder Woman, it is certainly possible that this system won’t be centered around combat as much as the Mordor games were. Instead, it will be focused on more of a recruitment type of feature. Perhaps, this could be more circled around other NPCs as opposed to Wonder Woman herself. Until more concrete details are released, everything is just speculation at this point.

Become Your True Self

There is definitely some much-deserved buzz surrounding this game at the moment. Even though everything is fun to think about, it is going to be some time before anyone gets to see any in-game footage. It is going to be interesting to see how the developers are going to make a demi-god vulnerable and how it will mechanically play into the game. This is especially true where the Nemesis System is concerned. Wonder Woman is still early in development and it will be a couple of years, at least, before this title launches. Hopefully, Monolith will reveal some tasty gameplay details for gamers to mull over soon during the wait.
