The (Totally) Phantom Menace

Think that the epic lightsaber fights were the only good part of The Phantom Menace? Well, I hate to break it to you, but you’re WRONG.

Don’t believe me? Check out this video which takes a close look at the choreography behind these fight scenes, and as you’ll see, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are some of the worst lightsaber fighters in the galaxy.

I understand stunt fighting, but swinging your saber a solid three feet away from where you know your opponent is makes you just look foolish.

  1. Eh, if this guy has to freeze frame and narrate to point out the problems in a fight like this, I’d say they succeeded. It’s not at all a problem when I’m actually watching the movie. Nor was it a problem for almost anybody else, as far as I can tell.

  2. IMO, it’s still an entertaining fight scene at the end of the day.

I AM tired of fight scenes where the duelists seem to go out of their way to hit each others swords rather than actually try to hit each other.

On the other hand…”real” sword fights are short, ugly and brutal…three things that don’t fit very well in high concept, rated PG space fantasy movies.

  3. now lets all pick apart the original trilogy light saber fights which you dont even have to slow down to see how bad they are. like, off the top of my head, how about that extremely slow spin obi wan pulls off while fighting vader in ‘a new hope’?

  4. aw, really? c’mon now, this is getting silly. why not slag ridley scott’s alien off because the xenomorph is obviously a man in a suit? sometimes the effect is more important than the mechanics behind it. as joshua says, there’s nobody slowing down and freeze framing the fights from the original trilogy to “prove” how crap they are.
