No Boys Allowed!
I guess there’s some controversy about a new all-girl X-Men comic that apparently guys don’t like because well, I don’t know. There’s no one to project themselves onto? Comic book nerds are confusing some time.
Anyway, inspired by that recent development comes this whimsical piece of art from Skottie Young showing the girls with their own “No Boys Allowed” tree fort build over the skull of a Sentinel. I don’t think the actual comic is this adorable, but I’d actually rather see this in action, I think.

Skottie appears to be a big Bill Watterson fan, methinks.
Just to play Devil’s Advocate here, as I don’t care one way or the other, I suspect the reason these sorts of things bother people is because when you advertise a run as the “All-Girl X-Men,” it seems to put the political maneuvering of the gender issue ahead of any other concerns. Like, say, quality.
In other words, the perception would be that they’re just messing with the property to make a point.
That said, I also understand they’re TRYING to make a statement, which is what an “All-Girl X-Men” is. So on that level, it’s a success. Well, I should say it’s a success as a concept; we haven’t seen the actual work yet.
The other thing I’d say is that — and I admit I’m not up to date here — if Marvel goes ahead with this run on the characters but continues publishing the majority of its works in the status quo of casual sexism, then I’d be forced to assume this is mainly a marketing decision.
Sorry for all the run-on sentences.
I hadn’t heard about the all-girl X-Men comic book, but I think it’s a great idea (and DR I’m sure it’s just a marketing decision because that’s pretty much their obligation as a company).
Way back when I was a young teen, the New Mutants was my favorite comic book because I felt like I could identify with the young protagonists. I think girls are way more into comics and “Geek Culture” now than ever before so this is a great idea; give them a (hopefully) cool comic book with diverse female heroes (as opposed to the archaic Wonder Woman) to enjoy.
I could be saying this just because I have a daughter and since comics were huge for my development coming up, I’m hoping she gets into them too!
ANYWAY, very cool Watterson rending
Gender issues are an issue because we keep making it an issue.
An all-girl X-Men is a stunt. The fact is X-Men has had female heavy rosters before and nobody had a problem with it. But when they go out over their way to make a “girl power” message, of course it might illicit some eye rolls.
If this sort of thing tickles your fancy, there is a web comic called JL8, featuring DC heroes (and villains occasionally) as 8-year-old kids. Pretty funny but also poignant at times. It’s a good read.
I for one, am totally fine with an all girls xmen comic. im all for a little girl power in primarily male dominated nerd culture.
Yes because a bunch of hot women in tights fighting crime in a comic book is so something we men don’t wish to see…some dudes are just weird.
