Nerdgasm for New Year’s: Geeky Things to Be Excited About in 2015

Stephen Colbert, David Letterman

Television Worth Tuning Into

I’m not a big TV watcher but there’s still enough buzz regarding the spring season to take notice. Firstly, Netflix will be adding to their original content roster while expanding the Marvel universe with shows about Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones.

While he may not be a superhero, Saul Goodman helped thwart more evil doers with his legal phinesse in Breaking Bad that Better Call Saul will likely feel like a Marvel property unto itself. Speaking of which, creator Vince Gilligan’s Battle Creek is set to debut next year where he will have to prove that the Breaking Bad magic was not just a one-time occurrence.

Most groundshaking of all will be the retirement of David Letterman and his replacement by the consummate Stephen Colbert. Shedding his pundit parody personality, Colbert is still sure to misdirect his audience with razor-sharp wit and played-straight comedy while giving every single guest one hell of a hard time.

Replacing Colbert’s post Daily Show slot will be Larry Wilmore, who has shown a knack for clever exposés and biting irony delivered in a deadpan fashion. I think just like John Oliver and Colbert, the Daily Show helps achieve a pedigree of entertainment credentials that will set Wilmore up for success.

Other promising albeit odd ideas premiering in 2015 will be J.J. Abrams reimagining of the cheesy western/sci-fi/thriller Westworld and Will Forte’s Last Man on Earth, which won me over with its charming and well-directed trailer. Both series are likely to be worth watching, even if no one remembers them by 2016.
