Metroid: Samus Returns – What You Need to Know

Metroid: Samus Returns is an upcoming installment in the Metroid franchise that will be released for the Nintendo 3DS. It promises to be something both old and new, meaning that it should provide something for fans as well as newcomers to the sci-fi franchise.

Here are some of the things that interested individuals should know about Metroid: Samus Returns:

Remake of Metroid II

Given its name, it should come as no surprise to learn that Metroid: Samus Returns is a remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus for the Game Boy. However, while it will retain the narrative of the original, it will have a number of new features as well, with examples ranging from melee counterattacks to new powers called Aeion abilities.

Headed By Sakamoto Yoshio

The project is being headed by a man named Sakamoto Yoshio, who is one of the co-creators of the Metroid franchise. On the one hand, he has been working on a wide range of Nintendo video games since 1982, meaning that he brings plenty of expertise and experience. On the other hand, Sakamoto is the man responsible for Metroid: Other M, which was panned for some questionable gameplay choices as well as narrative choices that were seen by significant swathes of the fandom as being not just incompatible with other Metroid games but also detrimental to Samus Aran’s character. Summed up, this particular piece of news is something of a mixed bag to say the least.

Collaboration Between Studios

With that said, Metroid: Samus Returns is a collaboration between Nintendo and a Spanish studio called MercurySteam. For those who are unfamiliar with the name, MercurySteam has been creating titles for major video game consoles since 2004. In particular, it might interest people to know that the Spanish studio is the one responsible for the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow games as well as a Metroid prototype for either the Nintendo 3DS or the Wii U that never managed to make it into actual development.

2D Metroid Game

Since it is a remake of a Game Boy game, most people will have realized by now that Metroid: Samus Returns will be a 2D Metroid game rather than a 3D Metroid game. In fact, it is the first 2D Metroid game that will be released since Metroid: Zero Mission in 2004. Something that should come as welcome news for people who are feeling nostalgic for the older installments of the franchise but still interested in the innovations that have been introduced since those times.

To Be Released in September of 2017

Regardless, Metroid: Samus Returns will be released in September of 2017, meaning that interested individuals will be able to make their own judgments about the game sooner rather than later. At this point, it seems best to maintain an attitude of cautious optimism, meaning that interested individuals should hope for the best while paying close attention to news of its release so that they can get a fuller picture of what it entails before making a final decision about whether to buy or not.
